So i got the delux edition of FSX, and I wanted to try the mission builder. I followed the instructions for setting up the sdx, and I double checked my dll.xml file to make sure that nothing was disabled. But when I start FSX it starts up like normal. There is no tools menu. Any ideas? Here is a copy of my dll.xml file. It's located at: C:\Documents and Settings\Ryan\Application Data\Microsoft\FSX\dll.xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="Windows-1252"?>
<SimBase.Document Type="Launch" version="1,0">
<Descr>Launch</Descr>
<Filename>dll.xml</Filename>
<Disabled>False</Disabled>
<Launch.Addon>
<Name>Object Placement Tool</Name>
<Disabled>False</Disabled>
<Path>D:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK\Mission Creation Kit\Object_Placement.dll</Path>
</Launch.Addon>
</SimBase.Document>
FSX is installed here: D:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X
the SDK is here: D:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK
Ideas?

Download all the Windows updates, you may need .Net for it to work.

Right, RadarMan. I have my Windows auto-updates on, and directly after an auto-update and install, I noticed an improvement in what would appear to be the "autogen". TNX |

You might consider (if you haven't already done so) registering your GMax and checking out squid while you are there |

You are expected to edit:
C:\Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Microsoft\FSX\dll.xml
to read:
<Disabled>False</Disabled> |

I also cannot get the mission creation tool (or the tool menu period) to show up.
I have the latest Windows XP updates. I installed the SDK, the SDK update, and made the appropriate changes to the dll.xml file. I made sure the <disabled>false</disabled> was set.
I started up FSX in windows mode and entered free flight. I turn on the menus and there is no tool menu beside help like I have seen in screen shots of others who have it working.
I've read the install guides and searched the net. Anyone else have this problem and fix it? It seems easy to setup, yet I must be missing something.

Ok, finally got it sorted out. I'm not sure which of the following things got it working, but it does work now.
- Removed the dll.xml in C:\Documents and Settings\<my user>\Application Data\Microsoft\FSX and replaced it with the one in the SDK/Mission Creation Kit/ directory
- Changed the <Disabled></Disabled> entry to 'False'
- Placed the SimConnect.xml file from the SDK\Core Utilities\SimConnect SDK\config into C:\Documents and Settings\<my user>\Application Data\Microsoft\FSX
- Placed the SimConnect.ini file from the same place into My Documents\Flight Simulator X Files\
Now when Flight Sim is launched, I see a SimConnect dialog that tells me if the ObjectPlacement tool loads. For a while I saw the dialog, but no indication if the tool was loading.
Again, not sure which thing fixed it, but the above got it working for me. Hope this helps someone.

Can someone help me? I have done all the things done in the previous post and all I get is a command prompt windows that says that the dll ha loaded. The SDK doesn't launch. How long does the command prompt window stay there? I can't close the command prompt unless I close Flight Simulator X. Can someone help please? Thanks in advance - Orion |

I see the following in the SimConnect dialog that pops up after launching FSX:
0.00000 SimConnect version 0x00000002
0.53256 DLL Loaded: Path="C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK\SDK\Mission Creation Kit\Object_Placement.dll" Version="10.0.60905.0"
If you see that, then it should be working. You have to go into free flight mode and turn on menus with the "ALT" key. You should see the tools menu on the right of the menu bar beside 'help'. The SDK does not launch by itself or anything. The SimConnect dialog stays there until you quit FSX (you can minimize it if you want).
When it wasn't working for me, I only saw the first line of the SimConnect dialog i.e. "0.00000 SimConnect version 0x00000002"
Hope that helps. |

Check this out
The Deluxe version of Flight Simulator X contains a very easy-to-use tool for placing scenery objects visually within the game. Unfortunately, the Microsoft developers neglected to tell anybody. This document contains an illustrated explanation of this tool and how to use it. Very sorry - no support of any kind is offered. For questions or problems, please post in the Avsim scenery design forum.

This is a great little manual, well illustrated, plenty of JPEGs in the 'images' folder. It'll tell you everything you want to know. ...I hope so anyway |

I tried using it, but I decided not to. I had a similar problem, but it was that I didn't launch Free Flight! So you need to launch Free Flight and then go into windowed mode (Alt-Enter), then you can use the Object Placement Tool. |

Would just like to say a very big thank you to other Guest.
I have been struggling for months trying to get SDK to run and I can say that following the instructions given concerning moving files etc, my SDK also now works fine.
A big thank you and to all those who haven't tried it...try it...

Unless you know how to make software add-on items, the SDK(Software Developers Kit) won't do anything for you. It's used to manipulate the code of the program, If you don't know what you're doing, you can screw up your program.

Hello All and RSparkyC
I had the same problem with DLL.XML for Object Placement Tool in FSX
I found how to do it, please see below and it's working
<Launch.Addon>
<Name>Object Placement Tool</Name>
<Disabled>False</Disabled>
<Launch.ManualLoad>False</Launch.ManualLoad>
<Path>Object_Placement.dll</Path>
</Launch.Addon>
Best regard
