i didn't try the "triple play" package that i have on FS-9.
You're doing my head in cf
Ok, the update is by Roger Mole I take it. I don't understand why when loading the a/c it would be looking for the 'lear' gauge. I searched every single panel.cfg in RM's update package for a reference to that gauge but - nada.
Yesterday I couldn't even find David Copley's site (figuring that going to the source would be a good place to start) ... but I've found it now, in case you want to have a look:
http://www.kazoku.org/xp-38n/
So on this page he says:
"As for FSX updates, I've decided to put those on indefinite hold. There's too much work to do for little gain. So I'm sticking with FS2004 for a while, as far as making models."
On David Copley's 'Models' page:
http://www.kazoku.org/xp-38n/model/index.htm he actually refers to Roger Mole's update:
"* For those who have attempted to use my models in FSX, I want to mention several problems, all known issues with running FS9 models in FSX:
1) panel window and gauge problems
2) blurred prop textures are rendered behind clouds (exterior view only)
3) scenery behind canopy glass is messed up / missing
4) 'un-textured' parts are all black
5) emissive parts don't shine (eg, non-fx lights)
6) no landing lights (somewhat fixed by FSX SP1)
With my permission, Roger Mole has released a package that helps with issues related to #1 (panels and gauges). Download from SOH."
So the only possible solution I can think of now is that you make sure you've put the CAB file (2Eng_Switches.cab) in its right place - just copy and paste into the gauges folder should do. I'm assuming though that you've already done that...

I just reached enlightenment!!!
I kept looking at the Info.txt instead of the ReadMe.txt
Did you see this?
I have no idea how if at all the 'RSTART1 AND RSTART2 GAUGES' relate to the 'Lear' gauge - but we might as well go by the book.
You could also try to place the .cab file into the panel folder of the P-38 instead of the FSX/Gauges directory.
