At the top of the forum (below the google ads) there's a link to your profile, at the bottom of that page you can change it by either uploading a picture or linking to one somewhere on the internet.

The limits are pretty draconian though, i looked forever to find a gif that was small enough

I've found the same problem and have yet to figure how to reduce a photo to make it smaller. With the demise of my FSX and change to FS2004, I no longer have access to the Goose, so have decided to punish the default Lear 45 for a bit. I thank you for your help. Now to find a small enough picture, Hee, hee.

Here is a cute little program, easy to use and free:

What you call draconian some, including myself, would call common sense. There were times / occasions where you couldn't find the actual post due to the oversized Avatars and Signatures.
Since you like your animated .gifs you could try ULEAD GIF Animator: http://www.ulead.com/ga/
or this thing I only just found - seems to be free: http://www.jhepple.com/gif_animator.htm

I wasn't trying to complain about them or anything; I have no issue at all with the resolution constraint, the hard part was the file size constraint.
