Hey Tailhook, how are you doing Buddy?

I finally got around to building myself a new system over the last week. I just got FSX and REX installed a couple of days ago so haven't done much yet. Here are some specs:

Intel Core i7 875K Quad Core LGA1156
ASUS P7P55D-E Pro LGA1156 P55
Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB SATA3 6GB/S 7200RPM 64MB Cache 3.5IN Dual Proc HD
OCZ ModXStream Pro 700W
GTX 260 core 216
G.SKILL F3-10666CL9T-6GBNQ 6GB DDR3 3X2GB DDR3-1333 CL 9-9-9-24
FSX, REX 2.0. 2010. 0611 - Overdrive, GEX N. America
dual boot Windows 7 64 bit/Linux Mint 9 64bit.

a picture:

a few shots here

I love those fluffy REX clouds

Hope everyone is healthy and flying well... Wink

Hey Michael I'm just fine, thanks for asking Very Happy Nice to see you.

This new rig of yours looks so neat and tidy inside... the mind boggles. Thanks for the specs, plenty of food for thought. I would by now have built, bought or stolen a new rig myself but decided to wait until next year; apparently Intel don't support USB 3.0 yet... and I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I need yet another new, bigger external HDD.
Damn... you shouldn't have posted the pic of the box, I'm still staring at it, trying to think what enclosure that might be... is that huge fan on the top part of it?

Your screenies look extremely crisp, thanks for sharing. Am I reading this correctly, you've set the Target FPS to 30?

Don't be a stranger now and remember to turn off your new toy and go to sleep when your forehead hits the desk Razz

Glad to hear you're doing fine TH.
that case of mine is the
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811139003

comes with a 200 mm fan front and top. I removed the rear 120mm fan to install the Coolit Eco. and added another fan to the front of the radiator to push a bit more air.

the case is really nice. you have a large space behind the MB tray to keep all your cables out of sight.

Tht board has the Intel P55 express chipset with has full support for USB 3 (not that I have any USB3 devices) and SATA3 which I am using now. Can't say as I see any difference in performance running the hard drive on the SATA3 controller. They say you get faster burst speeds, but other than that I think the 6gb/S speed thing is nice marketing hype..
I put a 640gig for Windows7 64bit and programs and a one TB - also WD SATA3 for storage and other operating systems.

Just testing the sim at this stage Rick, so yes that is FPS capped at 30. I was using 27 for a while and also unlimited FPS and my eyes don't really see much difference as long as it is running over about 24 fps. How do you set your frame rate cap, or do you cap it at all?
Keep in touch.
When my eyes can't see any more, I put it to sleep.. Rolling Eyes

That is one huge case, I could park my car in there... thanks for the link.
That's good news about the USB 3.0 support -- perhaps the source of my info wanted to push outdated parts Evil or Very Mad
Had I googled for your mobo I would have seen... as right now I'm also looking at the November issue of a PC magazine where they tested the budget version of the ASUS P7P55D-E (LX)... USB 3.0 is written all over it, even on the board itself!
Regarding the speed, in the October issue of the same mag they tested the WD-My Book 3.0 2TB external drive: Peak write speed 93.6MB/s. Will we be able to run FS off a dedicated external HDD in the near future?

In FS9 I'm using 'Unlimited' FPS, it works fine and appears to be the best choice for my rig when running FS9.
In FSX I've got FPS set to 25... sufficient, can't remember when I decided on 25 but I am sure there was a reason for that Razz ...and from memory, 'Unlimited' in FSX is a no-no on my current rig.

Cheers!

I haven't done any testing with USB speeds Rick as I don't really use it except for occasional backups, but from what I've read the speed increase for USB 2.0 to 3.0 is not near so big as they would have us believe. I've heard in normal comuter use of transferring big files it's more like twice as fast.
Running FSX from an external USB 3 HD? From what I've read, I doubt it but who knows?

Lovely screenshots, try setting the FPS lock higher and see how good they get? Very Happy

Hi Cheeks,
I have tried setting the lock higher, but don't really see any difference.
Performance is smooth with anything over about 24 fps to my eyes.
what should I be looking for?

Here are a couple more.
the forum resizes these really small so it's hard to get an idea how they look full screen, but to me they look the same at 1920X1080

First two were taken the other night on the new machine.
the second two were taken before the upgrade.

Awesome pix man! Cheeks someone told me that FSX actually runs BETTER with the fps set to unlimited, unlike how we used to do it in FS9 (26-30). So far they seem to be correct.... it does seem to run smoother with FPS never falling below 25 for me.

Well there you have it, I had no idea, I'm still a FS9 man, albeit with FPS locked to 60 and almost never drops
