Hi

since Tuesday I've been unable to get my computer started. I go to sign in and it takes about 5 mins to get to my desk top then another xx amount of minutes to load up my programs.

It was working perfectly fine on Monday. Here is a list of things I did on Monday night before going to bed.

Went to www.download.com and downloaded SpyBot and an anti-virus software and burned a CD for myself for work.

I can't even run SpyBot or my anti-virus to see if any attacks have happened.

Any advice would be grateful

Dump the cookies in your browser then put the computer into safe mode and run spybot.

You must be infected.
Personaly I would back up what I could and reinstall Windows.

It sounds similar to an MSN virus that was going around (cute.pif). It doesn't allow you to search for anything with the word "virus" in or open any virus software etc.

Group Wave

It's good to hear that you don't have to reload Windows and lose everything.
Watch out what type of sites you go to and download from.

There are a few ways, I prefer this one.

******
To use the System Configuration Utility method

Close all open programs.
Click Start, Run and type MSCONFIG in the box and click OK
The System Configuration Utility appears, On the BOOT.INI tab, Check the "/SAFEBOOT" option, and then click OK and Restart your computer when prompted.
The computer restarts in Safe mode.
Perform the troubleshooting steps for which you are using Safe Mode.
When you are finished with troubleshooting in Safe mode, open MSCONFIG again, on the BOOT.INI tab, uncheck "/SAFEBOOT" and click OK to restart your computer

The way I done it was start the computer up
and keep pressing the F8 key and choose safe mode and follow the instructions
