Any single engine aircraft that weighs less than 12,500 LBS! Though with an easy conversion the sky is the limit!

Once you receive your CPL and start working, you might be required to add the strips to your shirt!

Most pilots don't really care about the strips. All they want to do is fly! Cool

Leaving college as in you're done with it? Or leaving it as in you're not completing it?

The airline industry is a really competative field, so if you're planning on leaving school just to do that it might be a problem. PPL is just step one, you also need to get your Instrument rating, twin engine rating, commercial pilots license, (and the list goes on...). Before an airline even looks at you you'll usually need 1000s of flight ours, even if you're only applying at the regional airline level. There will be tons of people with military background, from flight schools, and many other places all competing for the same job you are. Not to mention if you are hired, you usually pay somewhere around $14k just to get type-rated on an aircraft, and end up with some really low pay to start with!

Granted anything is really worth flying Wink . But at least get a degree under your belt so that you can work somewhere part - time for the years it'll take you to get the experience you need. I'll search UVA's forums and try and find the pilots stories around there, because there are tons of them! Most of them either had military background and got in back when the airline industry was still booming, or have been working for the last 10 years at getting a position and finally have succeeded!

If you're determined though, can't wait to see you behind a yoke! Very Happy

Read above, good advice. I am only posting to say this:

Do not leave college!
"Remember son, knowing your way around the simulator does not mean you can fly".

Im based in the UK, so i could leve college with my HNC and go back and do my HND anytime. The other reason i would concider leavign college is to get a part time job and do my training along side it.

My plan was to take out a bank loan and do my PPL,

If you live in the UK I take it you have AS and A levels? To become an airline pilot, it is a very good idea to have a degree, as it shows to airlines that you can be dedicated to something and can stick at it. If you don't want to do a degree then it will be more competitive but you can still do it on A levels providing you did reasonably well. Wink

Aviation carreers,

A good buddy of my brother in law's just got hired by American Eagle which all here will know is the regional carrier operated by AMR/ American Airlines. He is the 1st officer on an ATR. He just got hired a month or so ago and is flying out of Dallas Ft. Worth. This hire represents his first professional job flying. -He is 32 yrs. old. The point is that he never gave up his dream to fly.

I had heard for years that he was still somewhere 'mired' in the process of learning and financing he education in starts and fits and sort of dismissed it as a folly. I was wrong as now he is hired. It would not suprise me if he wound up flying in the right seat of an MD-88 or for A.A. in a couple years.

I suggest finishing college. If there are money problems then attack that problem before 'jumping ship' or skipping steps to get where you want to go.

--Above advise meant to be suggestive only. Follow you best inclinations and good luck.

Um...stripes...no. You'd probably be laughed at, being that you can only fly a single engine prop thing...Keep at it though, and you'l earn your stripes
