Hi there,

I am trying to update my MSN Messenger to the latest version and the specifications require that I have IE 6. I havn't bothered updating to the latest version because I normally use Firefox.

I downloaded IE 6 and when it is installing it the following message appears: "Setup was unable to uninstall all the components. Please close all applications and try running setup again".

Since then I have tryed reinstalling many times, including selecting the custom install option, where only IE 6 is selected, and not Outlook, Media Player, etc that comes with the dowload.

My OS is ME edition.

Any support / similar problems would be appreciated,

Thanks,
Jarred Smile

I don't use I.E. but I did have the same problem with updating Media Player from version 9 to version 10. I deleted version 9 and then it would install. You might try that with I.E.. Completely remove your old version of I.E. and then install the new version.

You should be installing the updates every month. That may be the reason it won't work.

I did use Real player for a long time and liked it, I upgraded to a version of it I didn't like at all. It IMO was too intrusive. I was constantly getting messages on the screen on what it wanted to do. I am not particularly a fan of Media player but it doesn't do that.

I have I.E. on my computer but seldom use it. I don't have Outlook express or Instant Messenger configured to work.

Years ago I was in an IRC chat room, we used WinAmp to play MP3's and it worked well. I haven't used it for a long time and I'm sure it does a lot more now than it did then. I may have to check it out again. About the only thing I do is play CD's while I'm working on the computer and I don't need much to do that. I do view video clips once in a while.

I like a program that I am in control of, not a program that tries to control me. That was my problem with that version of Real Player.

When I did a clean install of Windows I never installed REAL, if you do you can't get it out of your system. QuickTime is almost as bad.
I just use WMP 9, it works, it came with FS9.
I have QuickTime because of all the times it's needed, but if you check, REAL is a choice that you can avoid.

That is another problem with Real, it don't like to make a clean uninstal. I don't care for Quicktime either, I just think it's a junky program.

Apsolutelly agriee with you RadarMan but just wonder....If you have real in your system and removing it from add/remove programs then clean up the registries(from default Xp option-run/regedit- and also with a program such adaware for example) and also delete the real player file from programs files, you havent clean your system from real?

I personally am a fun of format solution in order to clean a pc(of course if it is demanded and the problems seems to be unsolved)but its obvious that this solution isnt the best(time to back up ,install, etc).
My way for all this proccess of reinstalling OS and all the programs after a format is that ,last time i formated my system (one year and a half ago)i was created an image (ghost)of my set-up just after i install OS,MOBOs ,VGAs and periferall advices drivers and some favorite programms(i use norton ghost but i have use acronics for another pc and it was great too).In this way i avoid to stay in front of pc and put in put out CDs etc.I only put a DVD and it runs the set up.(It is needed a boot floppy disk cause it runs in DOS mode and after it you put the DVD or CDs to continue set-up.This disk is created when you start create the image)Of course in order to check it i had to do two formats. One for usuall set up and the other for image set-up Shocked .Since now i have never face up to a problem caused of this way of set up my system but im open to any notices about it.

I upload a very usefull tool about media players.
Its an exe.file that installs a full codecs package to your excisting media players(anyone you use)and helps to open almost all kind of video formats. You will notice also that it creates an icon in control panel.Anyone who likes can check it,its worth the time and its 100% safe.

I don't think you can get rid of it manually, just like AOL once it in the system, it's in the system somewhere forever.

Long bitter article but you can pick up some information if you read (and click) the entire thing.

That confirms in a way my opinion about formating.

Thanks for the link RadarMan Wink

If I had a nickel for every AOL CD I have received in the mail I could upgrade my computer. I have never used AOL but I know people who have, I wouldn't have it. It's another program that knows better how to run your computer than you do. No thanks.

Yeh,

Getting free coasters for my mugs of coffee delivered to me personally is a fantastic service!

They seem to keep releasing upgrades, I haven't received one for a while - i think my coaster at work is currently version 9.0?
