You really have to be carefull when using the net at work. There IT department knows what every site you visit even if you delete your cookies. Where I work at the moment we have full access to the www I haven't seen anything blocked yet. It is writen into our introduction pack the we (the employee) can use the internet in your own time but what does that actual mean?

I see it has the following,

I work between the hours of 0800-1700 Monday to Friday. So between that time my employer is paying me. So going back to the previous parargrapgh

we (the employee) can use the internet in your own time

So if I want to use the internet at work I would have to get to work really early and say late just to use the World Wide Web.
I can use the web during my break's (we all do) but I'm still on company time, apart from lunch which I go out to lunch. It's just not worth it.

I won't even touch on the subject about downloading at work.

Your lunch break is considered your own time.

Your 15 minute morning and afternoon breaks are your own time too that you are legally entitled too. If that break could involve you sitting in a coffee room doing nothing it could involve you sitting at your desk surfing the web.

Allow me to disagree in this point dear Doc.

Since the web access is something that the company give us for specific kind of work ,any kind of other use of it is forbiden.
The break time is for specific reasons which are prescribed from the companies rules but not for surfing. This is clear.
Now the fact that some of us use it most for ourselves and less for work(in the break time or not) its because our companies close the eyes to it.
They(companies) pay for net access and they have all the illegal rights to use it and modulate the acces to it as they like.

Well, that really depends on the company and what they have stated in the contract or standard practice conditions, in Liono's case "on your own time". He didn't mention any further clause that states "but not in your break time".

My company applies no such rule that you may not browse the web in your break times, so I think there is no general application of fact here - it depends on the company's individual rules.

The break time is for specific reasons, to have a break from your work; unless they specifically say to the contrary, surfing during your break is therefore a break from your work and could be allowed.

I'd say it would depend on the type of the job and the strictness of rules and regulations. Many people I know work in offices in London and do anything they like on the computers they work at Dont Know Some are luckier than others I suppose. Just my opinion Wink

Cheers!
