does anyone know if you can add another processor to a computer? and if so does the speed at which it processes sum linearly with the addition of the processor?

thanks

Hi,

Yes u can add the another processor to ur computer only thing is that the mother board should support 2 processors... That type of motherboard is known as dual processor motherboard.

And yes processing speed of the computer with 2 processors is fast than the single processor.

Any more computer help or question...do ask me its my profession....

List your system specs here and you will get more help.
ie: motherboard make and model, amount of memory, CPU, etc.

and what is the reason you would contemplate adding another processor.
There are other ways to increase the speed of your machine.

Not all operating systems and applications can utilize dual processor configurations, although I know if no problems with FS 2004 running on a multi processor config.

You have a bit of research to do before you contemplate this.

thanks for the info guys, here are my specs:

Toshiba emachine
T3985, 340 Intel Celeron D 2.93 Ghz 256K L2 Cache 533 MHZ FSB
80 gig hard drive
8 in 1 media card reader
Intel Extreme Graphics2 3D
512 MB DDR SD RAM Dual Channel Capable

not sure where u find the motherboard specs, but i have the one that came with the computer.

hope this info means something! lol

again i thank anyone who helps me Smile

That machine has an Intel d865gv mobo which doesn't support two processors.

First thing i would look at is the amount of RAM you have, that board will take upto 4GB of RAM.

I'd also look at upgrading the video card.

My board is very similar to yours and upgrading these components made a massive difference.

I second that.

another 512 megs of memory would make a big difference to FS 2004.

thanks again guys,

1.with this machine, could i switch the motherboard to one that runs dual processors? and 2. would adding the 4 gig of Ram on top of that make this machine zip?

1. Yes you could change the board, but do you really want to go to the expense of buying a new board and two processors? Another thing to consider as an alternative is changing the processor to a P4 with Hyperthreading Technology such as a Northwood or Prescott (your board also supports these). If you are seeking better performance purely for FS 2004 then it's not really necessary.

2. Yes you will notice a difference with 4gig, but 2 gig would be plenty. As i said, this is where i would start. Wink

do those processors go up to 3.6 ghz or higher? (the P4 Northwood or Prescott with hyperthreading technology)

sorry for my computer ignorance!

I think the Northwood and Prescott go up to 3.4 Ghz, but i belive there is a P4 HT extreme which goes to 3.6 and i'm pretty sure your board supports it. Wink

.... and you saved a fortune by not buying a duel processor board!! Cheers!
