Performance for Dollar

I'm looking for opinions on upgrading my computer. It is currently a P4 at 2.4 Ghz with 512 Mb RAM and a 64Mb Geforce2 MX400 video card. I'm limiting myself to about $200.00 for this upgrade. What I am thinking of getting is an Asus GeForce 6600 video card with 256Mb memory and 1 Gb of system RAM. I only have two DIMM slots so just adding to what I have is not possible, although I suppose I could keep one of the 256 DIMMs. So here are some of my questions:

Is a faster video processor with less memory going to be more of an improvement? i.e. A GeForce 6800GT card with 128Mb as opposed to the 6600 with 256?

Would buying less memory and a more powerful video card give me faster frame rates? Say going to 768Mb RAM instead of 1.256Gb.

I am partial to Nvidia cards. I know some people love their ATI cards but I have just had better luck with Nvidia, especially their drivers.

Anyway, any thoughts or opinions would be appreciated. Thanks.

The card will give you a better "look" to the sim and faster graphics rendering but it you look ahead to FSX and Vista (which your 2.4 should handle well) you'll need at least 2 gigs of ram and that card will still be good, not the best but good. The best will be $400-$700 a 512mb top of the line.

Thanks. I'm leaning towards spending another 30-40 bucks for the GeForce 6800GT. MS claims Vista will run on 512Mb machines. MS has also woefully underreported the amount of RAM required for previous operating systems. With this machine I probably won't upgrade to Vista immediately anyway. At least if I get a single 1Gb stick of RAM and feel deprived I can add another one later.
