How do you figure out what Altitude to fly on an route. Say I fly from Milwaukee to Toronto in a CRJ-200 would 30000 be a good alttitude?

It's based on direction.

Magnetic course 0-179 degrees----------Odd thousands
-----------------180-359 degrees---------Even thousands

And if you screw up filing, ATC will assign you whatever altitude they want anyway, usually (!) something pretty close to what you want....but thats in the real world.
