PCI and PCI-E are two different things. Either your motherboard has it or it doesn't.

Most modern cards are PCI-E and so are MOBO's so do your homework and make sure your MOBO is either PCI or PCI-E and work around that. Also if you have an old PCI MOBO just sit back and do your sums because in the long run a upgrade might me the better opinion rather than to sink more funds into and aging system.

The 8800GTX is a bit longer than the 8800GT/GTS.

oh, how i wish such a trick were possible! my current card is an nvidia geforce fx5500 pci slot. it was the best card of that type i could find. if i could have went pci-e i could have all the sweet textures i see folks post here. still, for what it is, it performs pretty well. i wonder if it could be overclocked a little?

No but could you list all your system specs....... EG Make/model how much ram ,PSU, MOBO, CPU etc etc? Do that and we can then help you. Better still copy paste your "dxdiag" but blot out your computer name you will find your computer name new the top of the list.

You may want to look at a new computer. In order to upgrade to a PCI express video card, you would have to replace your motherboard. That would probably would cause you to have to replace your processor and RAM. I'm in the same boat as you are.

I also want to replace my motherboard at some point, to get some more ram. I spoke to the it guy at my school about this and he said that if you uninstalled every single extra thing on the motherboard and it's and driver (sound card, graphics card extra usb slots, wireless card, etc,) then you don't have to re-install Windows.

Not true. If you replace your motherboard with another, you will have to re-install Windows. Windows has to read/write info to the BIOS on the motherboard. When I upgraded both my processor and motherboard I had to re-install Windows. It needs the necessary boot sequence (like where to load and boot Windows from) for Windows to operate.
