Early morning and a lone PBY patrols the Pacific sky, the crew know what they're looking for, they know it's out there somewhere it's only a matter of time......
.......the pilot decides to make one more course change before returning to base, after a while one of the crew calls out "There...over there" they all see it...
...the pilot tells the radio operator to break radio silence and send the co-ordinates, "but that'll give us away", "just do it"..."and now lets get the hell out of here"...
On the small Atoll the message is recieved and the few B-17s that are there are sent on their way

They would do little or no damage to the approaching threat, that would be left to someone else. The date is June 4th 1942, battle was about to be born and history made. The Akagi, Kaga, Soryu and Hiryu were about to meet the Enterprise, Hornet and Yorktown at a little place called....MIDWAY.....

Having been discovered earlier than hoped and farther from Midway than they would have liked the Japanese launched the first strike at Midway, and with it would instigate the first ever battle between two opposing Carrier Battle Groups.........

Whoever lost this crucial battle would probably lose control of the Pacific and effect the whole outcome of the war.....

While Midway was being attacked by the first Japanese strike another raid was carried out by B-17s from 20,000ft which did no damage, but brought up zeros as fighter cover, now as the first strike recovered to the carriers the zeros also needed refuelling. At this moment when his carriers were defenceless Admiral Nagumo recieved news of an incoming air attack from aircraft off the Hornet and the Enterprise

In all, led by Lt Cdr Mclusky, 67 Dauntless dive bombers,29 Devastator torpedo bombers and 20 Wildcat fighters were involved. Unknown to them Admiral Nagumo had changed course and only the torpedo planes found the Japanese fleet. The other flights searched in vain until they ran out of fuel and had to ditch such was their determination.

Lt Cdr Waldron wrote in his final letter to his squadron
"My greatest hope is that we encounter a favourable tactical situation, but,if we don't, i want each of us to do our utmost to destroy our enemies. If there is only one plane to make a final run in, i want that man to go in and get a hit.May God be with us."
Prophetic words, the attack was met with fearsome fire from the carriers and escort ships and over 50 Zero fighters, few torpedoes were fired and none hit their target

Only one pilot survived the onslaught!

Keep it coming mate keep it coming Very Happy

Oh but Jesus Christ the Japs and the Yanks only had half a carrier runway to take off on in those pics. Shocked i would'nt be surprised if most of them just fell in the water. Confused

Thanks for the kind comments gents Very Happy , morris91 it's really quite a feat when you think of it, i'd rather be the last to take off than the first. But the bravery of these people never ceases to amaze or astound me! Especially the torpedo attack by the devastators, they knew they had no chance but still went in, it really sends shivers down my spine!

Oh yes the bravery of the men on the carrier's is just shocking.

I love stuff to do with WW1 & WW2 and i have lots of Documentry films to do with american pacific fleet when pilots take off and in some of the films i'v seen men in WildCats & F4U Corsair try and take off and fall in the water still with there perpella still spinning some don't make it some do.

Its shocking what men do to fight for there country.

Keep these brilliant stories coming Welsh Very Happy

A short while later another attack by US torpedo bombers failed but served the purpose of keeping the Japanese focused on these attacks and kept their fighters busy
It was while they were engaging the torpedo bombers that they failed to notice the dive bombers that had launched from the US Carriers

This proved to be a fatal error, the first attack took out the Akagi detonating a torpedo store, within minutes flames reached the fuel store and she was doomed, the Kaga suffered the same fate and while only 3 bombs hit the Soryu they did enough damage for Captain Yanaginoto to order abandon ship (he went down with it along with over 700 ships personnel).

In the space of 5 minutes the Japanese had lost half of it's carrier fleet.

However there was still some fight left in the Japanese fleet, aircraft from the Hiryu attacked the Yorktown and disabled it so badly that she was ordered to abandon ship

While the battle raged during the day

the ending was now inevitable. At a stroke the Japanese had suffered a crushing blow that would be vital for the Pacific campaign.
As for the Yorktown,it was hoped she could be towed to port for repair but in the early morning of June 7th a lone Japanese submarine breached the fleet defences and sank it with two torpedoes at 0600

Thank you for all your kind comments!

Hey...!!! What's up kids??? Is it too much to ask to go spamming somewhere else Question

Have you even looked at all the screenshots in this topic --- have you bothered reading the commentary? No? ...you haven't had time, you were in a hurry??

An attempt to educate you sandbox dwellers: If you want to spam in order to become chief captain, don't spam the threads of members who endeavor to make this an interesting place to hang out. Instead, just start your own topics in the "Off Topic" forum and observe the response you'll get.

All right, all's fine -- bygones. Now let's pay some respect to the man who spent many hours to put all of this together. Okay?

ROFL ROFL

That will actually be an improvement on my real looks Big Grin

For those who didn't know, the WWII Japanese fighter pilots actually wore face masks usually made of leather to protect their faces from hot oil splatters and engine sparks. The Japanese Zeros were far superior in maneuverability compared to any allied fighters at the time. However, those incredible aircraft had their shortcomings which have been well documented.
I saw some pictures of those masks in a book once, unfortunately I was unable to find any decent ones on the net. Ninja
