flying from manchester to dublin on an IFR low alltitude airways flight, when all of a sudden while the autopilot was following the course the plane decided to do a complete u-turn and go back?

can someone explain/help me out on this?

You may have inadvertently added a waypoint that was behind your current point so you had to go back and meet that point before moving on. Also make sure you had the AP set up correctly and you didn't change the GPS/NAV switch to NAV. Check your flightplan and on the GPS and it should work 😉
