Help finding a new PC

Pro Member First Officer
sonicninja First Officer

Hey folks.....im feeling pretty depressed this evening. Fear

Due to bad weather etc my home recieved a series of power cuts & electrical surges this evening and my pc has been "blown to bits".

So as of tonight im looking for a new "all singing, all dancing PC". My current pc was only 6 months so ill be getting somthing a little better with the insurance money.

If i post a few ideas would anyone mind letting me know if these are good enough systems or not to run FS9 with great quality.

My previous systems graphics are available for viewing at my homepage/signature link at the bottom of this page.

Heres a few systems ive been looking at, my budget is about £1000.

First of all 1 question.

Do you own a surge protector? If not why not. This small little outley could of saved you buying a new PC. I apologise if that statement sounds sarcastic but they come in very handle in thunder storms and very sensetive PCs

I agree with Greekman72.

My turn to agree with Liono. Wink

The same thing happened to me a few months back and had to buy a new mobo. Brought a surge protector at the same time and the prize was £24.99 about $50.

Now if my house get's struck by lighting and my PC blows I get £25,000 from the surge protector company if the surge protector didn't work.

Even my parents have one in every room in the house 5 rooms in total.

okay, so its a little late to bolt the stable door now that the horse has bolted, i will invest in a surge protector Laughing

More to the point is my new machine!!!

Cheers for the comments Greekman i like that machine too but ill keep checking this post until after the weekend then make my decision, but so far I like the machine you recommended also Clapping

keep those recommends coming fellow flightsimmers, i want to get the right machine Laughing

PS: Liono, congratulations to your parents for owning a surge protector too, very very impressed, full marks to them, what clever parents you have Clapping Group Wave

Also try an invest in UPS unit as well. have a look over these units

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Un_Interruptable_Power_Supplies_55.html

They come in very handy.

I would personaly have a more powerful PSU unit. I would go for this unit 525W Performance ATX v2.0 Power Supply. For future upgrades.

I like #2, add more ram when you can. I'd settle for #3 with more ram
As for the surge protector, show me one person that has ever collected thousands of dollars because it failed and I'll believe it. Yes I do use them.
If your looking at protection look at something worth while, not a free or $5 plug strip.

build a custom one, and build it yourself / get a friend who knows how to do it for you

works out cheaper, the £150 you can save can upgrade something for you Wink

i dont know anyone that can build computers Insight Crying or Very sad

But im sure the folks in here could help me, like I said, my budget is about £1000 (i already have a 19" TFT monitor), so we could make it a "project" to help me get all the bits and pieces on the net with everyones advice etc, once a system is agreed I will purchase the parts, have my brother put it together for me, install FS9 and then post a few screenshots and review the system in this forum!!!!

Sounds great to me.....or i could juct purchase a ready made one!!!

I agree with my Friend Insight. Its a great experience to build your own system but from the other side if you dont have any idea of it i would like to notice that since you buy a ''ready'' one you have the technical support and all the after sales services that you will not have in the build one.You will only have the tech support for each piece.

Final decision is yours.

I would ike to build my own pc for a change, i need to make it sure it was a really great machine for graphics as i mainly use a pc for FS9 and obviously for FS10 when it comes out next year. As long as it was very quick with stunning graphics I would be happy with it.

But i can see the point of the aftersales support, so im not too sure what to do, depends really on what £1000 would get me if I bought one and if I built one.

First of all don't buy from PC World there after sales is rubbish, and from numerious people who I have had the pleasure of knowing do not reckon mend PC World.

Another question what sort of CPU do you want AMD or Intel?
What sort of graphics card do you require AGP or PCI-E?

Give me a few hrs and I'll post an ideal system (with links) for you. I just need you to answer the 2 question's so I know where to start.

Well, the pc i had which is now gone (RIP) had an AMD ATHLON 3500+ and that seemed quite good, but ive not seen the P4 in action so I no no difference, and my previous graphics card was a 256mb ATI Radeon 9550, which i know was getting on a bit but i do like the ATI series, so AGP for me i think

Many thanks for help Liono Wink

ok

i skipped a few replies so forgive me,

firstly - as Liono says.. if you find yourself near PC world, run in the opposite direction as fast as you possible can!

www.overclockers.co.uk do some good pre built systems that will give you ideas of specs.. if you spec a shopping basket up with the same components you will find it is 150 quid ish cheaper...

I would say DEFINATELY go PCI Express for the gfx card, get 1 gb of RAM minimum and I can highly recommend the Crucial Ballistix kits they sell...

my recent new PC was abnout 1300 in total and I have got myself a nice system

Piece of advice, I recommend the ATI cards (1800 XT? or XL) over the nvidia 7800 range at the moment

I just wish I had waited for the ATI cards that have just come out, still tempted to sell my current card on eBay and buy the ATI card afterwards.. :s

Oh, and I ended up adding another gb of the same memory as in the specs - the extra gig makes an astonishing difference

once the insurance guy has been round i'll know which direction my money is going, apparently my insurance company will probobly opt for a direct supply replacement (or as near to it) from where I purchased my pc:- www.savastore.com so unless im offered the ££££ to go and buy myself a new machine I will be asking my insurance company to supply me with this machine:-

RIGHT Idea Ive made a decision, im going to go for option number 2 which is:-

Octan Ultimate 7800

AMD Athlon 64 4400+ X2 Dual Core Processor with 2000MHz HyperTransport Technology
2x512MB (1GB) Dual DDR 400 (PC3200) Branded Memory
256MB NVIDIA Geforce 7800GT PCI Express Graphics
250GB ATA (133Mbps) 7200rpm Hard Disk Drive
16X Dual Layer Mutli-Format DVD +/- Rewriter
Optional Digital and Analogue TV
Integrated 7.1 8 Channel Surround Sound Audio
Ultra-fast 10/100/1000Mbit Gigabit Ethernet LAN (Broadband Ready)
2 Front, 6 Rear Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Ports
Carrera Coolermaster Centurion 530 Midi-Tower Case with 380W PSU
19'' TFT Analogue Flat Panel Multimedia Monitor
Microsoft Basic Keyboard & Microsoft Optical Mouse
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2
Microsoft Works 8.0
Panda Antivirus Titanium 2004 (1yr virus subscription)
Roxio Easy CD Creator Suite 7

It comes in at £1289 with the 2x 1GB (2GB) Dual DDR 400 (PC3200) Branded Memory.

Im pretty confident that this is a great system and will run FS9 just as good if not much better than my last system (RIP).

can you get the ATI 1800 XL or XT instead? one of them is the same price as the 7800 GT and is much better in terms of performance!!!

do you really need windows? you should have a licensed copy from your old machine

do you really need the monitor?

cut back on that sort of thing if you already have it and get an extra GB of RAM and maybe another HDD and get a RAID config going (faster disk read times or striped for resiliance to HD failures)

just read your last words about the 2GB |RAM option... i upgraded to 2GB shortly after buying my new machine and it makes a huge difference

I also wish I had held out for an ATI 1800 series card

Pro Member First Officer
sonicninja First Officer

ill try some re-calculations Insight and see how it works out with the old pennys.

I found it strange that with the monitor option that its cheaper to have a 17" CRT than absolutely no monitor at all!!

Pro Member Chief Captain
Insight Chief Captain

that is very strange indeed!

the 2nd GB of RAM WILL make a huge difference and i am pretty sure that one of the ATI cards is same sort of price as that GT and will do you better.

have you already a keyboard and mouse?

if so dump them, dump windows too if you can use your old copy.

dump

Microsoft Works 8.0
Panda Antivirus Titanium 2004 (1yr virus subscription)

if you can too, avast antivirus is free and the best anti virus software I have found anyway

I'm suspicious of the AMD having HT tech, thats an intel tech I thought...

You could probably drop a level on the processor too and not be hurt too much by it, may find the money to sure up your ram and card!

Pro Member Chief Captain
Insight Chief Captain

ok

I looked at the options

the 4200 is more expensive than the 4400???

I would phone them about this, I would say thats a cock up! get the 4200 once establishing the real price difference, or if they are completely mad and that is correct downgrade to the 3800+ (i have one and they are great, as you are on socket 939 already you can always upgrade to a faster one later when they become cheaper!)

don't like that they don't give you a choice of mobos

they also don't have any of the latest ATI cards.. removing all the crap at the bottom i have it at £1273.27 inc. VAT with 2GB of ram and a bigger PSU ( which you may need) it also supports ATX should you fancy adding another gfx card later on and the GTX nvidia 7800:

Carrera Coolermaster Centurion 530 Midi-Tower Case with 380W PSU
480W ATX v2.0 Power Supply
AMD Athlon 64 3800+ X2 Dual Core Processor with 2000MHz HyperTransport Technology (hmmm... sure HT is intel)
2x 1GB (2GB) Dual DDR 400 (PC3200) Branded Memory
250GB ATA (133Mbps) 7200rpm Hard Disk Drive
256MB NVIDIA Geforce 7800GTX PCI Express Graphics
16X Dual Layer Mutli-Format DVD +/- Rewriter
No Second Optical Drive Required ( you don't need one with the above really)
SoundBlaster Audigy LS 7.1 8 Channel Surround Sound Audio ( real soundcar will take the additional load away from the CPU
Ultra-fast 10/100/1000Mbit Gigabit Ethernet LAN (Broadband Ready)
No Keyboard Required
No Mouse Required
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2
No Dual Operating System Required
No Office Suite Required
No Security Software Required
No Security Software Required (under CD burning option, xp can burn CDs)
17" CRT Analogue Monitor (if it really is cheaper, again, phone them - if it is, screw it take it and flog it on ebay Smile )

I have never heard that before, and a friend of mine who has had both the nvidia 7800s and the ATI 1800 recently spent a week benchmarking each and comparing and decided the ATI performed better..

That is my reason for suggesting the ATI, it seems this company doesn't sell the ATI cards in question though.. and the 7800GTX is a mighty card (try and get the GTX if you can)

I understand that some people find some cards better for some things than others.

but blow for blow the ATI does perform better than the nVidia in most of the fields if not all, thats a simple fact - i wish I had bought an ATI now.

Sad

The tests he did were not based on opinion, they were done with all other specs identical running exactly the same tests (not just benchmark tests like 3d mark but in game tests too) to find out which card actually performed better.

All i do is tell you the results of his testing Smile

Pro Member Chief Captain
Greekman72 Chief Captain

I have no reason to not beleive you my friend but i will compare again with some facts in the world of automobile.I remember a test between two small cars from the same category The VW golf 1.6 and the FIAT stilo 1.6.The winner in the points was Stilo. And if someone take the specs of them it was true. But after 9 years of this tests most of Stilos are wrecks and most of Golfs are in traffic...

Tests are always tests...Im a litle careful with them and i always have on my mind the fact that some manufactures in order to sell their products gives some...credits...in the magazines for best promotion...Anyway i dont believe that your friend was...victim...of something like this, and i believe that he knows what he reads and from where.

Anyway...I accept and respect ATI manufacturer but only as a competitor of Nvidia, not as a better one.

My opinion of course.

Pro Member Chief Captain
Insight Chief Captain

I have used both cards and at the moment I am wishing I had gone ATI..

NVidia's driver releases have been a total shambles and I am still running a Beta version that was released to let users play day of defeat source.. any driver released after that time makes any of the games I play including FS9 unplayable.

This never happened to me during the lengthy amount of time I was using ATI

Pro Member Chief Captain
Greekman72 Chief Captain

This is indeed a serious point that we must keep on mind...and sure a minus point for Nvidia.

Did Nvidia officialy accept it?

Ive sent a complaint to Norwich Unions complaints department so hopefully this will resolve the issue.

I have missed at least 20 hours of flying time in the 2 weeks ive been without a pc and with Christmas coming up ive got 2 weeks leave booked, i really need to get back up in the clouds before the wife starts getting ideas about going to bed early and taking long walks along the beach together at the weekends Tongue

The last time my pc conked out she ended up pregnant Oops!

Well folks I finally got an insurance settlement today from Norwich Union for the sum of £850.00 Group Wave

So this is what I bought:-

Octan Special 6800
AMD Athlon 64 3800+ X2 Dual Core Processor with 2000MHz HyperTransport Technology
2x512MB (1GB) Dual DDR 400 (PC3200) Branded Memory
2x 200GB (400GB) Ultra-Fast SATA (150Mbps) Hard Disk Drive
256MB NVIDIA Geforce 7800GT PCI Express Graphics
16X Dual Layer Mutli-Format DVD +/- Rewriter
Integrated 5.1 6 Channel Surround Sound Audio
Ultra-fast 10/100/1000Mbit Gigabit Ethernet LAN (Broadband Ready)
2 Front, 6 Rear Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Ports
Carrera Coolermaster Centurion 320 with 380W PSU
17" CRT Analogue Monitor

I'll be selling the monitor on ebay straight away as I have a 19" TFT already and also I will be adding another 1GB of memory that I have spare.
In the end the pc cost me £150 out of my own pocket but I think its better to upgrade in an insurance claim instead of replacing an old system.
I would like to thank everyone that helped me out with this forum and look forward to hearing your remarks on the system ive bought.
Fingers crossed I will have it delivered in the next 3 days and be back up and running.

Its been a long wait and I cant wait to get back on the runway Clap
