Can anyone tell me what the slats are and how do they work?

Also how do I use them in FSX?

Slats are found on the leading edge of the wing on larger aircraft.

They increase the surface area of the wing to promote the amount of lift produced by the wing. Most aircraft have them working simultaneously with incremental flap extension.
