FSX Flight Tracker on FSX:SE – yes, it can still be used, but it depends on how it’s grabbing the data

Hi Judd — I’ve seen a few folks still run FSX Flight Tracker with FSX: Steam Edition, but the big “it depends” is how FSX Flight Tracker is connecting to the sim (SimConnect vs. FSUIPC vs. something else). FSX:SE can be a little picky if an app expects the boxed FSX SimConnect setup.

A couple practical things to check

  1. Make sure FSX:SE is running normally first (no compatibility mode, no “Run as admin” unless you need it for other add-ons).
  2. If the tracker uses SimConnect: confirm whether it can “see” FSX:SE at all (i.e., does it show aircraft position/altitude updating once you’re in a flight).
  3. If it uses FSUIPC: verify you have the correct FSUIPC version installed for FSX:SE and that the tracker is actually pointed at it (some apps need you to select the interface).
  4. If you’re getting a “can’t connect” type error, the usual culprit is missing/incorrect SimConnect client on the machine running the tracker.

What I’d need to know to give you a solid yes/no for your setup

  • Are you running the tracker on the same PC as FSX:SE, or a networked PC?
  • Does FSX Flight Tracker give any connection error message, or does it connect but not log flights?
  • Do you know if it’s using SimConnect or FSUIPC?
  • Any other big add-ons in the mix (weather engine, VA clients, ACARS, etc.) that also use SimConnect?

If you can post what you’re seeing when you try to connect (even just the exact wording of any error), I can tell you the most likely fix path. Also — I’ll keep an eye out for you on the tracker side; JWKiefer is easy to spot.
