Hi all,

Please go easy on me, as I’ve been away from sims and PCs for years.

Back in the day I bought a lot of flight sims (as far back as Jane’s Israeli Air Force), played them briefly, then moved on without really mastering them. Now that I’m retired, I have dozens of boxed sims and add-ons.

After looking into compatibility issues with modern systems, I decided it would be best to buy a refurbished retro system on eBay. Since the most common OS for these games seemed to be Windows XP, I purchased a PC running Windows XP SP3 with the latest drivers, etc., very cheaply.

The first game I installed was Flight Sim X Gold Edition with the Acceleration expansion pack. That went like a dream. I’d never even opened the cellophane wrapping, but it installed instantly and I was able to register both products using the UK customer support line.

I was also able to install CFS 3, but I can’t find a way to register it. I have the key, but the PC has no internet access (I use a Mac). Is there any way I can use the key to register?

Many thanks,
Andy

Hi Andy,

No worries — you’re not the first one to get tripped up by this, especially on an offline XP box.

A key point with CFS3: unlike FSX (which could be activated by phone in a lot of cases), Combat Flight Simulator 3 typically used online activation back in the day. On a Windows XP machine with no internet connection, that can leave you stuck because there isn’t a built-in “offline/manual activation” method exposed to the user like you might be expecting.

That said, there are a couple of practical things worth trying/confirming before we conclude it’s a dead end:

1) Confirm what “register” means in your case

  1. Does CFS3 actually refuse to run, or are you just seeing a “registration” / “activate” reminder screen?
  2. If it launches and flies fine, you may not need to do anything further (some Microsoft titles only “encouraged” registration).

2) Check whether you installed the original release vs. a later re-release
Some later/distribution variants behaved differently regarding activation. The easiest way to sanity-check is:

  1. Start CFS3 and look for the exact activation message wording (write it down).
  2. Also check the version shown on the main menu (if it gets that far).

3) If activation is truly required, the only legit routes are usually:

  1. Temporarily give the XP machine internet access (even briefly) just to complete activation (then disconnect again).
  2. If you’ve got any way to add a cheap USB Wi‑Fi dongle or plug it into your router for 5 minutes, that’s generally the simplest fix.

A couple quick questions so I don’t send you down the wrong road:

  1. When you say you “can’t find a way to register it,” what exactly happens when you launch CFS3 — do you get an activation wizard, an error, or does it run but nags?
  2. Which exact CFS3 edition is it (original Microsoft box, “budget” re-release, etc.) and what region (UK/EU/US)?
  3. What is the exact text of the message you’re seeing (if any)?

If you can paste the message text verbatim (or a photo of the screen), I can tell you immediately whether it’s a hard activation block or just optional registration.
