Asked

I’m installing FS2004 on a Windows XP system.

I can’t find a flight planner or moving-map program that will run on Windows XP.

Any suggestions?

FS2004 + XP moving map / planner options

On XP the trick is sticking to older, Win32 apps.
Anything needing .NET 4.x or newer won’t run.

1) Built-in FS2004 planner + map
Don’t overlook what’s already there.

  • FS2004 has a full flight planner in the sim.
  • It also has the in-sim map display.
  • That combo still works fine on XP.

2) Use FS2004’s own flight plan files
Most external tools expect the standard FS9 format.

  • Create the plan in FS2004.
  • Save it as the normal FS2004 flight plan.
  • Then see if your external tool can import it.

3) Keep it “period-correct”
A lot of classic FS9 utilities were written for XP.
But names matter, because some had later builds that broke XP support.
If you can tell us what you already tried, we can narrow it down fast.

A few quick questions

  • Which XP is it, SP2 or SP3?
  • Are you on XP 32-bit or 64-bit?
  • What moving map or planner programs did you try already?
  • Do you want a separate PC app, or the in-sim map is acceptable?
  • Are you running any GPS/FMC add-ons that need an external planner?
