Short version: MSFS uses Xbox Live for your profile, even on Steam. The green overlay is that sign-in. When it won’t accept clicks, it’s usually an Xbox/Gaming Services sign-in component, overlay conflict, or Store/Xbox token issue.
Try this checklist, in order:
- Fully exit MSFS and Steam. Reboot the PC.
- Make sure time/date/timezone are correct and set to automatic.
- Open Microsoft Store. Sign out, then sign back in with your usual Microsoft account.
- Open the Xbox app. Sign out, then sign back in with the same account as the Store.
- Open Microsoft Store Library and click Get updates. Update Gaming Services and Xbox components if listed.
- Press Win+G to open the Xbox Game Bar. If prompted, sign in there. Close it afterward.
- Reset the Store cache:
wsreset.exe
Wait for the Store to reopen, then reboot once more.
Repair the Xbox/Gaming Services components:
- Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Search Gaming Services. Open Advanced options > Repair. If no change, use Reset.
- Do the same for Xbox and Xbox Identity Provider if present.
- If still stuck, remove and reinstall the components:
PowerShell (Admin):
get-appxpackage Microsoft.GamingServices -allusers | remove-appxpackage -allusers
get-appxpackage Microsoft.XboxIdentityProvider -allusers | remove-appxpackage -allusers
Then open Microsoft Store, search and install Gaming Services and Xbox Identity Provider again. Reboot.
Check required services:
- Open:
services.msc
Ensure these are Running (start them if Stopped):
Xbox Live Auth Manager and Xbox Live Networking Service. Also verify Gaming Services.
Rule out overlay/input conflicts:
- In Steam > Library > MSFS > Properties, disable Steam Overlay for this game.
- Temporarily disable other overlays (Discord, GeForce Experience, RTSS, MSI Afterburner, Overwolf).
- Unplug extra controllers briefly, leaving only keyboard/mouse and your primary joystick.
Clear stale Xbox credentials:
- Open Credential Manager > Windows Credentials. Remove any entries starting with Xbl or Xbox Live.
- Sign out of Microsoft Store and Xbox app again, then sign back in.
Run MSFS once as Administrator:
- Locate and run:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\MicrosoftFlightSimulator\FlightSimulator.exe
Right‑click > Run as administrator. Then try launching via Steam again.
If it’s still stuck:
- Repair Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime in Settings > Apps (the sign-in uses it).
- Try a clean boot to exclude third‑party conflicts, then test MSFS.
A few quick questions to narrow it down:
- Are the Microsoft Store and Xbox app both signed into the same Microsoft account you previously used with MSFS?
- Does Win+G let you sign in to Xbox Game Bar successfully?
- Do you have any overlays running (GeForce/Discord/RTSS)? Did disabling them change anything?
- Which Windows 11 build are you on, and are all updates installed?
- After removing/reinstalling Gaming Services and Xbox Identity Provider, did the overlay become clickable?
