Asked

FSX used to show my vertical landing speed in red in the top-left corner of the screen, but I no longer see it.

How can I turn this display back on?

Expert Answered

FSX “red landing rate / vertical speed” readout

That readout is part of FSX’s built-in *info text* overlays. It’s easy to accidentally toggle off.

Try this first (quick toggle):

  1. Load a flight (any aircraft is fine).
  2. Press SHIFT + Z one time.
  3. If you don’t see anything, press SHIFT + Z again (it cycles through a few different info lines / modes).

One of those modes includes the landing/impact-style line that shows up in the top-left, often in red depending on the event/value.

If you’re still not seeing it:

  1. Make sure you’re not in some “clean” view mode that’s hiding text overlays. Try switching views once (e.g. press S to cycle) and then try SHIFT + Z again.
  2. If you’re using any add-on camera/view tool or shader/text overlay utility, temporarily disable it and re-test. Some of them suppress FSX info text.

A couple quick questions so I don’t send you down the wrong path:

  • Are you on boxed FSX, FSX: Steam Edition, or FSX + Acceleration?
  • Do you mean a continuous vertical speed readout during flight, or the “landing rate” text that appears at touchdown?
  • Any add-ons running that change the view system (EZCA, ChasePlane, etc.) or any “hide HUD/overlays” hotkeys you might have mapped?
