Asked

Hi, I have MSFS downloaded on my PC, but I bought it as the Xbox version. I’m wondering if VR isn’t working because I didn’t buy the PC version.

Does anyone know if the Xbox version installed on PC is the same as the PC version? If it is, does anyone have any tips for getting my Meta Quest 3 working with MSFS 2020?

Thanks in advance.

VR on the “Xbox version” (Microsoft Store / Xbox app) for PC
Tom — if MSFS is installed and running on your PC (even if you purchased it via “Xbox” / Xbox app / Microsoft Store), it’s still the PC build. In other words, buying it through the Xbox ecosystem doesn’t block VR by itself. VR is only a “no” on the actual console version running on an Xbox.

So if VR isn’t coming up, it’s almost always a setup/runtime issue rather than the license type.

Step-by-step: get Quest 3 talking to MSFS

1) Confirm MSFS sees a VR runtime at all

  1. Start the Quest Link method you plan to use (Link cable or Air Link) and make sure you are actually in “PC VR” mode (not just standalone Quest home).
  2. On the PC, make sure the Meta/Oculus PC software is running before you start MSFS.
  3. Launch MSFS normally (2D on the monitor first).

2) Use the in-sim VR toggle correctly

  1. In MSFS Controls, search for the “Toggle VR” binding (people often bind it to CTRL+TAB but any binding is fine).
  2. Once you’re sitting at the main menu or in a flight, hit your Toggle VR keybind and see if it switches.

3) If nothing happens when you toggle VR
This usually means MSFS isn’t getting a valid OpenXR runtime.

  1. Make sure the Meta/Oculus PC software is set as the active OpenXR runtime (this is in the Meta PC app settings area). If the runtime is pointing to something else, MSFS may not switch.
  2. If you have SteamVR and/or other VR platforms installed, they can “win” the OpenXR runtime tug-of-war. The goal is: Meta runtime active when using Quest Link/Air Link.
  3. Reboot PC after changing the active OpenXR runtime (annoying, but it clears a lot of stuck handoffs).

4) Sanity checks that catch the obvious stuff

  1. Update your GPU driver (NVIDIA/AMD) and reboot.
  2. Run MSFS in windowed/fullscreen normally first (don’t start in any special mode).
  3. Temporarily disable overlays that hook graphics (Xbox Game Bar, FPS overlays, etc.) just for testing.

A couple targeted questions so I don’t send you in circles

  • How exactly is MSFS installed on the PC: Microsoft Store, Xbox app, or Steam? (Sounds like Xbox app/Store, but want to confirm.)
  • When you press your “Toggle VR” keybind, do you get any message in MSFS (even briefly), or absolutely nothing?
  • Are you using Link cable or Air Link?
  • What GPU do you have (and laptop or desktop)?

Reply back with those details and we can narrow it down quickly.
