getting my xbox controller to work on microsoft flight sim x

terry shorrock Guest

hi

can anyone tell me how to get my Xbox 360 controller to work on my Microsoft flight simulator x?
the 360 controller is installed on my laptop but cannot find it in the controller settings in the actual game.
I have the 360 controller wired up via the USB wire.
the only option I can see in the game is mouse yoke or mouse look.

Certainly, getting the Xbox 360 controller to function with Microsoft Flight Simulator X (FSX) can sometimes be a bit tricky, but it's absolutely doable. Let me guide you through a comprehensive troubleshooting process.

Step 1: Confirm Windows Recognition

  • First and foremost, make sure your Xbox 360 controller is recognized by Windows itself. You can check this in Device Manager under "Controllers" or "Devices and Printers" in the Control Panel.
  • If the controller isn't appearing here, try unplugging and replugging or testing it on another computer.

Step 2: Update Drivers

  • Head to Device Manager, right-click on your Xbox 360 controller, and select "Update Driver". This ensures you have the latest drivers, which might solve recognition issues.

Step 3: FSX Settings

  • When in FSX, head to Options > Settings > Controls.
  • Ensure the "Controllers" checkbox is enabled.
  • From the "Controller Type" drop-down, you should ideally see your Xbox 360 controller. If it's not listed, try restarting the game.

Step 4: Configuration within FSX

  • Still within the Controls settings in FSX, select the Xbox 360 controller from the list and assign the buttons and axes as per your preference.
  • Remember to save your configurations after setting them up.

Step 5: Consider External Tools

  • If the in-game solutions aren't fruitful, consider tools like JoyToKey which maps controller inputs to keyboard keys.

Additionally, I'd like to mention that Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and X-Plane 12 both offer robust native support for controllers, including the Xbox 360 controller. If you ever decide to transition to these platforms, it will likely be more straightforward.
