Hello.

I’ve been using FSX for quite a number of years now, and I’m considering moving on to FSX2020. My question is this: are there any scenery developers planning to create more add-ons to highlight Scotland?

As far as I’m aware, there have only been about two scenery developers who have offered any software for Scotland. What they’ve released so far is very good, but it would be really helpful if the wider development community could address this lack of choice.

Scotland, which annoyingly is often regarded by many around the globe as being part of “England” (which it is not), has everything a landscape developer could dream of: hills, mountains, glens, majestic watercourses, ancient cities, and archaeology in abundance going back further than many other cultures. We have the iconic Forth Bridges (1 rail, 2 road), castles, the Loch Ness Monster, the modern Falkirk Wheel, ancient battlefields, and wildlife in abundance, plus much more.

Thanks for reading this. I’m from the older generation and I have trouble using my hands, so this took me some time to write and was a painful task.

I wish you all a very happy and prosperous New Year.

Hi Colin,

You picked a great part of the world to fly in, and I completely understand the frustration when an area you love doesn’t get much dedicated coverage.

A couple of practical points that may help set expectations:

  1. FSX (including Steam Edition) is essentially a “mature” platform now. New, large-area regional scenery releases for FSX have slowed down a lot over the last few years, simply because most developers have shifted time and staff toward newer sims.
  2. MSFS 2020 is where most of the “new development energy” has gone, so if you’re looking for the best chance of seeing additional Scotland-focused projects going forward, MSFS is more likely than FSX to get them.

In the meantime, a few practical ways to improve Scotland flying today (especially if you decide to stay on FSX for a while longer):

  1. Landclass / mesh: Even without a “bespoke” Scotland package, good terrain mesh and correct landclass can make the Highlands and glens look dramatically more convincing.
  2. Airports vs regions: Most “Scotland coverage” tends to appear as individual airports rather than one big regional product. If there are specific places you fly from/to often, building your scenery library around those fields can go a long way.
  3. MSFS advantage: Out of the box, MSFS generally gives you better terrain shaping and lighting, so even before add-ons, VFR sightseeing around the Forth, the lochs, and the coastlines can feel like a meaningful step up compared to default FSX.

A couple quick questions (so folks here can give you more concrete recommendations rather than guesses):

  1. When you say “FSX2020,” do you mean Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020), and are you planning PC or Xbox?
  2. Are you currently on plain FSX:SE default scenery, or are you already using any terrain mesh / landclass / texture products?
  3. What type of flying do you mainly do in Scotland (airliners into the bigger airports, or VFR/GA around the Highlands and islands)?
  4. Are there 3–5 “must have” locations you’d love to see improved (specific airports, cities, landmarks)?

If you tell us those details, I can steer you toward the most sensible approach for your setup (and whether moving now will actually get you what you want).
