Hi, I’m new to X-Plane and I’m running it on an M1 MacBook Pro.

I downloaded Ortho4XP for New Zealand plus the UHD mesh to underpin it. I followed the recommended install steps, but I don’t see any enhanced scenery.

When I load my local airport, I get a missing files message in Log.txt (for example, 40/172, 38/172, 39/172). If I load a different airport, the missing file numbers change, and I still don’t see any enhanced scenery.

Hi Donanaes,

What you’re describing (random “missing files” counts that change depending on where you start) usually comes down to one of three things in X-Plane:

  1. the scenery is installed in the wrong folder or in the wrong format,
  2. the scenery_packs.ini ordering is wrong, or
  3. you’re missing the required library/overlay content (so the mesh loads but you don’t get roads/autogen, or vice versa).

Below is a pretty reliable way to pin it down on macOS, especially on an M1.

1) Confirm the folder structure in Custom Scenery
Open:
X-Plane 11/Custom Scenery/

You should see folders that look “complete,” i.e. each scenery folder should contain an Earth nav data folder, and typically a terrain and/or textures folder depending on what it is.

Common gotcha: people end up with an extra “nesting” level like:
Custom Scenery/zzz_my_ortho/zzz_my_ortho/Earth nav data/
X-Plane won’t load that correctly. It must be:
Custom Scenery/zzz_my_ortho/Earth nav data/

Same idea for UHD Mesh. The UHD mesh folder should also be directly in Custom Scenery and contain Earth nav data at the top level.

2) Check scenery ordering (this is big for orthos + UHD mesh)
Open:
X-Plane 11/Custom Scenery/scenery_packs.ini

In general, you want the order to be:

  • Airports (top)
  • Overlays (like yOrtho4XP_Overlays if you built/installed it)
  • Ortho tiles (zOrtho4XP_... folders)
  • Meshes (UHD Mesh) (bottom)

If UHD Mesh is sitting above your Ortho4XP tiles, it can override them and you’ll never see the ortho imagery. If the overlay is missing or below the ortho/mesh, you may get photos but no “normal” roads/buildings.

3) Verify you actually have an overlay layer
A lot of first-time Ortho4XP installs on X-Plane end up with tiles only (the photo + mesh), but no overlay extraction. Without overlays, the world can look “empty-ish” even if the ortho is technically there.

If you have a folder named something like:
yOrtho4XP_Overlays
make sure it exists in Custom Scenery and is placed above the zOrtho tiles in scenery_packs.ini.

If you don’t have any overlay folder at all, that’s a likely reason you’re not seeing what you expect (or you’re only seeing default-looking landclass/autogen).

4) The “missing files” in Log.txt: get the exact lines
The “40/172, 38/172…” bit sounds like X-Plane reporting missing DSFs/resources while scanning scenery, but the important part is the actual path(s) it says are missing.

If you can paste the specific block from Log.txt (just the lines that include “Failed to find resource” / “Unable to locate” / “DSF load time” / anything that literally says “missing”), it will usually point straight at:

  • a bad folder name/location,
  • a missing library,
  • or a DSF mismatch (tile not actually present for where you’re loading).

A couple of targeted questions so I don’t guess wrong

  1. Which X-Plane version are you on (11.55, etc.)?
  2. Can you paste the exact missing-file lines from Log.txt (not just the “40/172” counters)?
  3. What are the exact folder names you have in Custom Scenery for (a) the New Zealand ortho tiles, (b) UHD Mesh, and (c) your overlay folder?
  4. Can you paste your scenery_packs.ini entries for those items (just that section)?

Once I can see the missing paths and your ini ordering, we can get this sorted pretty quickly.
