It's truly heartwarming to meet someone who's been an avid simmer since the floppy disk days. Over the years, many of us have faced challenges with evolving software and the complexities they bring. Here's a detailed approach to possibly resolve the issue you're facing with MSFS 2020 on Steam:

1. Check System Requirements:

Before diving deep, it's always a good idea to ensure your system specifications meet or exceed the minimum requirements. With regular updates, simulators can sometimes become more demanding.
2. Steam's File Verification:

Steam provides a feature that allows you to verify the integrity of the game files.

  • Head to your Steam library.
  • Right-click on MSFS 2020 and select Properties.
  • Navigate to the Local Files tab.
  • Click on Verify Integrity of Game Files.

This process will check for any corrupted or missing files and replace them.
3. Graphics Drivers:

Outdated or corrupted graphic drivers can be a culprit. Ensure that you have the latest drivers installed for your graphics card. Both NVIDIA and AMD regularly release updates that can bring improvements or fix known issues.
4. Windows Updates and Visual C++ Redistributables:

Keeping your OS updated is crucial. Simultaneously, MSFS 2020 requires certain Visual C++ Redistributables. Ensure you've got the latest versions installed. They can typically be found in the game's installation directory or can be downloaded from Microsoft's official site.
5. Administrator Mode and Compatibility Settings:

Sometimes, running the simulator in administrator mode can help. Additionally, tweaking the compatibility settings to run the software with settings optimal for an older version of Windows can sometimes do the trick.
6. Custom Content & Mods:

If you've added third-party content or mods, consider temporarily removing them. They can sometimes conflict with the core game, especially after updates.
7. Clean Install:

I understand you've faced challenges with reinstalling. When you uninstall, ensure that all residual files are deleted. You can do this by:

  • Uninstalling through Steam.
  • Navigating to the installation directory and ensuring all files are deleted.
  • Reinstalling MSFS 2020.

8. Steam Support & MSFS Community:

If all else fails, consider reaching out to Steam's support. They might have insights into specific issues or conflicts with recent updates. Furthermore, the MSFS community is vast and supportive. Someone might have faced a similar challenge and found an unconventional solution.

Lastly, from my knowledge, remember that software, especially something as vast and complex as a flight simulator, can sometimes have quirks that require a bit of tinkering. Your experience from the days of two floppy disks will surely aid you here. We're all here to help each other out. Stay persistent, and happy flying!
