Google (Earth) Flight Simulator - How?

Jake Pestell Guest

So my friend told me there is a way to play a Google flight simulator somehow - he mentioned Google Earth or something.

How do I go about playing this?  Do I need to install anything?  Is it realistic?  Any advice, full explanation and instructions are much appreciated.

Jake.

Hello Jake,

Great question! The Google Earth Flight Simulator is a hidden gem for enthusiasts looking to merge the detailed satellite imagery of Google Earth with the joys of flight simulation. Let's dive into how you can access and use this simulator.

Accessing the Google Earth Flight Simulator
Firstly, you do need to install Google Earth on your computer. Ensure you download the latest version from Google Earth's official website to enjoy the most up-to-date features and best performance. Once installed, accessing the flight simulator is straightforward:

  1. Open Google Earth.
  2. Click on the "Tools" menu at the top.
  3. Select "Enter Flight Simulator" from the dropdown menu.
  4. Choose your aircraft. You can select from two models: the SR22 for slower, easier control, or the F-16 for a faster, more challenging experience.
  5. Select your starting position. You can start in the air from your current view in Google Earth, or choose from a list of airports.

Controls and Navigation
Navigating in the flight simulator can be done using your keyboard and mouse. The arrow keys control basic maneuvers like ascent, descent, and turning. The ‘Page Up’ and ‘Page Down’ keys manage your throttle. For a full list of controls, you can press ‘Ctrl + H’ while in the simulator to display the help screen with all commands.

Is It Realistic?
As for realism, while Google Earth Flight Simulator provides a visually stunning experience, leveraging Google Earth's extensive satellite imagery, it is relatively basic compared to dedicated simulation software like Microsoft Flight Simulator or X-Plane 12. It lacks complex flight dynamics or systems modeling, making it more suitable for casual flying rather than hardcore simulation.

Tips for a Better Experience

  • Use a joystick if you have one. This enhances control over the aircraft, making your flight smoother.
  • Explore the layers feature in Google Earth to add places of interest, weather patterns, or even historical imagery to your flight environment.
  • If you find the experience enjoyable and wish to delve into more advanced simulators, consider visiting our free flight simulators section at Fly Away Simulation. We offer many full simulators and demos that provide a more comprehensive flying experience.

To sum up, the Google Earth Flight Simulator is a fantastic tool for casual exploration from the skies, providing a unique perspective of any location on the planet. It's a perfect starting point if you're curious about flight simulation but not ready to commit to more complex systems. It's easy to set up and can be a delightful way to spend an afternoon exploring the world from above.

Safe flights!
