I like how FSX uses the actual "pull up!" and "sink rate" sounds, but the "don't sink!" and "too low terrain/flaps/gear" sounds are way too calm. Where did the original voice go?

I tried replacing the original GPWS_ files in flight simulator x/sounds, but then I had no sound.

Is it possible to change the GPWS voice and/or add more GPWS sounds?

GPWS in FSX: what you can (and can’t) change

FSX’s “GPWS” callouts are a bit of a patchwork. Some alerts are hard-wired to specific sound events and some are effectively “owned” by whatever aircraft/gauges you’re using. That’s why you can get the aggressive “PULL UP / SINK RATE” type calls on one set, but the “DON’T SINK / TOO LOW…” set can sound oddly mellow (or different altogether).

Why replacing the GPWS_ files caused silence
Most times this happens because the replacement files don’t match what FSX expects.

A few common gotchas:

  • FSX expects .wav in a specific format. If you dropped in MP3s, or WAVs saved with an odd codec/bit-depth, FSX may just play nothing.
  • The filename must match exactly (including underscores/spaces) what the sim is calling.
  • Some GPWS sounds aren’t actually pulled from \Sound the way people assume—on some aircraft they’re embedded/played by the aircraft’s gauges or a custom sound module.

Step-by-step: do a safe test before changing everything
1) Back up the original files you touched (copy them somewhere outside the FSX folder).
2) Pick one GPWS wav you know FSX is calling (for example one you can reliably trigger) and test with a known-good WAV:

  • Make sure it’s PCM WAV (try 16-bit, 22kHz or 44.1kHz if you can).
  • Keep it mono if possible.
  • Keep the exact same filename as the original.

3) Load the default FSX aircraft and test in a simple scenario. If it works on the default aircraft but not your add-on, that’s a big clue the add-on is handling GPWS itself.

Adding “more” GPWS callouts
With stock FSX alone, you generally can’t just “add new GPWS logic” by dropping extra wavs in the Sound folder. FSX will only play the sound events it’s programmed (or the aircraft is programmed) to call.

So adding additional callouts usually means:

  • an aircraft-specific gauge/sound module that supports extra callouts, or
  • editing that aircraft’s sound/gauge configuration if it already has the logic but is pointing to different wavs.

Whether that’s possible depends entirely on which aircraft you’re flying when you hear those calm “too low…” calls.

A couple targeted questions so I can point you to the right place

  • Which aircraft are you using when you hear the “don’t sink / too low terrain/flaps/gear” calls (default 737, a payware Airbus/Boeing, etc.)?
  • Is this boxed FSX, FSX:Steam Edition, or Prepar3D?
  • When you replaced the files, what format were the replacements (WAV/MP3), and do you know their bit rate/Hz (or what program you used to save them)?

Once I know whether it’s default FSX GPWS or aircraft-managed GPWS, I can tell you exactly where to swap the voice and what’s realistic in terms of adding extra callouts.
