Asked

Hello! I’m looking to add a VR headset/system to my X-Plane 12 setup. Can anyone recommend a good option?

Also, is this the best place to ask for VR information, or is there a better forum/section for it?

VR in X-Plane 12 – headset ideas + where to ask

Hi kidapollos59 — yep, you’re in a perfectly fine place to ask. A lot of the XP12 VR talk ends up in the general XP12 areas anyway since it ties into graphics settings, plugins, and hardware.

A practical way to choose a headset
For X-Plane, the “best” headset usually comes down to a few very sim-specific priorities:

  • How sharp you need cockpit text (gauges/FMS/MFD readability)
  • Comfort for longer flights
  • How painless you want setup/tracking to be
  • Whether you’re OK being “tethered” (cable) versus wireless compromises

Recommendations (by what typically matters in XP12)

  • If you want the simplest, most straightforward PC VR experience: A solid “mainstream” PC VR headset with inside-out tracking is usually the least hassle (no external base stations to mount). These tend to be the easiest to live with day-to-day.
  • If you care most about readability: prioritize higher resolution panels/optics over fancy extras. XP12 is very “clarity hungry” in VR, especially if you fly airliners and need to read small text.
  • If you want the best tracking (controllers, room-scale, etc.): base-station tracked setups can be excellent, but they’re more work (mounting, cabling, and general fuss). For seated sim use, the extra complexity isn’t always worth it unless you already want that ecosystem.

Before buying anything: quick sanity check on your PC
X-Plane 12 VR can be demanding, so I’d suggest doing this in order:

  1. Post your full PC specs (CPU, GPU, RAM, and whether XP12 is on SSD).
  2. Confirm you’re already happy with XP12 performance on your monitor at the settings you like.
  3. Decide what you fly most (GA/VFR vs airliners/IFR) since that changes how much clarity matters versus raw smoothness.

Where to find VR info / what to search for
If you search this forum, useful keywords are:

  • “X-Plane 12 VR settings”
  • “OpenXR” (if your headset/runtime uses it)
  • “reprojection” / “motion smoothing”
  • “antialiasing VR”

A lot of “VR headset” threads end up being “VR performance tuning” threads pretty quickly, so those searches tend to get you the real-world answers.

A few quick questions so we can narrow it to a specific headset (and not waste your money)

  • What are your PC specs (CPU/GPU/RAM) and what GPU driver version are you on?
  • What’s your budget range?
  • Do you mainly fly airliners (small text, lots of button pushing) or GA/VFR?
  • Do you want to use physical yoke/throttle/hotas and mostly “look around,” or do you want to use VR controllers a lot in the cockpit?

Reply with those details and I’ll point you toward the best “fit” for XP12 VR and the kind of flying you do.
