I’ve been reading online that MSFS is coming to PS5, but has it actually been released on PS5 yet?

Also, how do mods work on PS5? Does it have the same MSFS Marketplace, and what about freeware mods? I don’t think the Marketplace has any freeware additions— is that true?

I’m looking for the full rundown on the PS5 version of MSFS.

MSFS on PS5 + mods/Marketplace/freeware – where things actually stand

As of today, Microsoft Flight Simulator has not been released on PlayStation 5. The only console platform it’s officially available on is Xbox (Series X|S), in addition to PC. You’ll see a lot of “coming to PS5” chatter online, but unless Microsoft/Asobo announce it directly, I’d treat those posts/videos as rumor (or people mixing it up with other sims).

So what would mods look like on PS5 (if it ever happened)?
This part is mostly “how consoles generally work,” because there isn’t an actual PS5 version to point at.

On console MSFS (Xbox), you don’t get open access to the sim’s file structure like you do on PC, so you can’t just drop community freeware into a folder the way PC users do with the Community folder. Console content is effectively curated/packaged and distributed through the in-sim ecosystem.

If MSFS ever did land on PS5, you should expect something similar: installed content would likely be limited to whatever is delivered through an official storefront/manager inside the sim (i.e., not free-for-all file installs).

Does it have the same Marketplace?
Again, there is no PS5 version right now, so there’s no PS5 Marketplace to speak of.

What I can say is: on Xbox, Marketplace content is the primary (and realistically only) way to add third‑party aircraft/scenery/tools, because you can’t install arbitrary freeware packages. PC is the “full freedom” platform.

Freeware in the Marketplace – is there any?
You’re basically right in spirit: the Marketplace is mainly payware. There can be “free” items from time to time (often official/free packs), but it’s not a general freeware library like the sites PC simmers use. Most freeware creators distribute outside the Marketplace, which is why PC users see way more freeware variety.

Practical bottom line

  • If you want the widest mod/freeware ecosystem: PC is the way to go.
  • If you’re okay with a more “console-like” curated add-on experience: Xbox works well, but you’re largely limited to Marketplace-style installs.
  • For PS5: there isn’t a release to buy or test right now, so any “rundown” is speculation until there’s an official announcement.

A couple quick questions so I can tailor the advice:

  • Are you choosing between buying MSFS on PC vs Xbox, and PS5 is just your preference, or do you already own a PS5 and are holding out specifically for that?
  • What kind of add-ons matter most to you—airliners, GA aircraft, scenery, utilities (GSX-like ground services), realism mods, etc.?
