how do you know that you are heading to an intersection on a specific airway? do you use the gps or is there any other way if the gps cant be used?

In the real world, the FMC usually guides you through jet airways (or victor airways) by typing in the prescribed landmark navigation aids. The GPS can also provide the airways in the sky, or ATC can vector you onto one.
Also, if you know you are over a navigational landmark, and that an airway exists (navigational charts) between that waypoint, and another, then you only need to fly on that heading to know you are on an airway - although airways are Class A airspace in the UK so you are subject to ATC guidance.

Flight simulator (Default setup)
1. You would need a navigational chart that shows airways.
2. GPS will allow you to go directly to intersection but won't ID the airway.
You can use the VOR receiver to navigate to the intersection via one of the defining radials but you would still need a chart. 🙂
