Does ATC recognise where I am in relation to the airport and give the vectors accordingly? I heard final turns of more than 30 degrees should be avoided so does ATC ensure turns are within 30 degrees?

Yes, you will receive previous vectors towards the airport when you will then be given vectors towards the runway of no more than 45 degrees (I've never had a higher degree vector than that). Generally, ATC provides quite shallow vectors to final.
😉
