Top Gear Aircraft

Jamie4590 Guest

Top Gear is a motoring show in the UK and I've noticed in the last few weeks that during the races that take place on the same race track every week there is a 747 parked in the background in the same place each time. It seems to be surrounded by trees and looks out of place. Last Sunday as well as the 747 in its usual place there was also a fighter jet parked in the background. I'm not sure what airfield it is but its intersting to see them.

Have you seen this video from top Gear

Remind me not to drive my Mondeo on a runway 🙂

😂 😂 Thats hilarious. It reminds me of the film Pushing Tin. Someone has commented what a pointless test. I think that sums up every Top Gear test they have ever done. 😂

That's what makes it so watchable 🙂

I'm pretty sure it's a disused BA 747 that is used in may experiments by Top Gear, like the one where they blow the cars away, and where the VW Touareg TOWS a 747... Best moment in History!

The 747 being towed was featured in yesterdays episode so that explains it! I'm not 100% sure but I think all the stunts/experiements are performed in a few days prior to the series being aired so although it appears the 747 is there for weeks on end it will have probably just been over a weekend. I've not seen the fighter jet in this series yet that I could see in the background last week so maybe thats in the last episode next Sunday.

Jeremy Clarkeson is a bit of a k*** and I didn't like the way the cows carcass was treated a few weeks ago even if it was dead (definately Clarkson's idea) but Top Gear rocks!

The latest Top Gear had a tractor towing that white 747 - but what is it exactly? It has two engines on each side mounted on the same pylon, and what appear to be tanks mounted where the outer engines would be. The engines also have very fancy (noise-reducing?) nozzles. I'm guessing the aircraft is some kind of test bed, or perhaps a tanker. Does anybody know?

I noticed the twin engines on the inner pylons she must be an engine test bed

The site is Dunsfold. It's available for download here (bottom one) http://www.simviation.com/fs2004scenery101.htm

The 747 was used for the new 007 Bond film Casino Royale which is why the engines look odd...apparently! Then on 5th gear (another driving programme using ex top gear presenters (except Tom)), Tom Ford towed it with a "standard" VW toerag - standard apart from 4 tons (!) of ballast to get some traction.

They are holding a Wings and Wheels show there in the summer. May go to it as i don't live that far away from it.
