I've added my new paint schemes for a few planes in FSX. They're just supposed to be added to the airplane file. The read me file says that I have to add some things to the config file. How do I make changes to the .cfg files?

There is no such thing as an 'airplane file' in FSX.
The read me file says that I have to add some things to the config file.
...well, what does it say?
How do I make changes to the .cfg files?
...which ones?
This is a great hobby and can be very rewarding if focus and concentration are employed.
Flightsimulator is NOT a Playstation. If you're gonna tweak, edit and add to your default files, you'll have to make an effort.
The best way to start is by asking well formulated questions. Nobody expects perfect syntax and spelling from you, but a little effort on your part will make life easier for everybody.
There are lots of config (.cfg) files. Each aircraft has its own .cfg and .air file. There is also the FSX.cfg. I suspect what your are looking for is the config file for the particular aircraft you are adding a paint scheme to. If so, go to that aircrafts folder and open the airplanename.cfg with Wordpad or Notepad - AFTER you back up the original. Make your changes, save the file and close it.
