Hi, I just bought a CH Throttle Quadrant and I’m having some issues, probably due to my lack of computer skills. I’ve installed the quadrant, but the levers don’t coordinate with the sim.

Instead of:

  • Throttle/Throttle
  • Prop/Prop
  • Misture/Mixture

It goes:

  • Throttle/Throttle
  • Prop/Mixture
  • Mixture/Prop

How can I get the levers to correspond to the game (and vice versa)? In calibration mode, the levers all move correctly. In the game it’s all mixed up. Do you assign the levers the same as the buttons?

CH hasn’t been very helpful and just forwarded four pages of computer talk. I tried downloading the CH Device Manager, but it doesn’t seem to do anything to address or resolve the problem.

Also, I’d like to split the screen and add a second monitor, using one for the panel and a larger one for the outside view. Is there an easy way to do this?

Last dumb question: can CH devices be plugged into a USB hub? I’m running out of USB ports on my CPU.

CH Quadrant axes swapped in FSX

This is a pretty common FSX hiccup and it’s usually down to FSX auto-assigning the axes “wrong” (or assigning them twice). The fact that they look correct in calibration but wrong in the sim is the big clue.

Step 1 – Disable/clear the bad assignments in FSX
1) In FSX go to:

  • Settings
  • Controls
  • Control Axes tab

2) Make sure the CH Throttle Quadrant is the selected controller at the top.

3) Look through the axis list and remove anything that doesn’t match what you want. Specifically, highlight and delete any:

  • Propeller axis assigned to the lever you want as Mixture
  • Mixture axis assigned to the lever you want as Prop

Also check for duplicates (same axis assigned twice). FSX will sometimes create extra assignments for a newly-detected USB device.

Step 2 – Reassign them manually in FSX
Still in the Control Axes tab, assign each lever one at a time:

  • Click the command you want (Throttle Axis / Propeller Axis / Mixture Axis)
  • Click Change Assignment
  • Move ONLY the lever you want for that function
  • Click OK/Accept

Tip: when you move a lever, make sure no other lever is moving even slightly (noise/jitter can confuse FSX).

Step 3 – Check sensitivity/null zone
In the same Controls area, set:

  • Sensitivity fairly high
  • Null zone low (or just a small amount)

Not directly related to “swapped” axes, but it helps avoid odd behavior after reassigning.

About CH Device Manager
CH’s tools can be useful, but you shouldn’t need them just to get correct axis mapping in FSX. Most of the time FSX assignments are the culprit. If you do use CH software, be aware it can change how Windows presents the axes to FSX (which is another reason things can look “right” in calibration but odd in-sim).

Second monitor: panel on one, outside view on the other
There are a couple ways to do it, but the “easy” method in FSX is generally:

  • Run FSX in windowed mode (Alt+Enter)
  • Open the panel/window you want (2D panel, radio stack, GPS, etc)
  • Right-click the window title bar and undock it
  • Drag it to the second monitor and resize

Then keep your main forward view on the primary screen.

USB hub
Yes, CH devices can be used on a USB hub. Best practice is:

  • Use a powered USB hub (especially with multiple controllers)
  • Avoid daisy-chaining hubs
  • If you get disconnects or “device not recognized,” move the quadrant back to a direct motherboard USB port

Quick questions so I can tailor this if it still won’t stick

  • Are you running FSX or FSX:Steam Edition?
  • Do you have any other controllers connected (joystick/yoke/pedals), and do they also have prop/mixture assignments showing in FSX?
  • After you reassign in FSX, does it stay correct after restarting the sim, or does it swap again?
