It seems you're encountering a rather peculiar hiccup with the Microsoft Flight Simulator 40th Anniversary Edition on Steam, specifically relating to the Xbox sign-in process. Rest assured, you're not alone in this; it's a common enough issue that has several potential solutions.

Firstly, let's address the basics:

  • Ensure your Windows OS is up-to-date. Outdated system files can cause unexpected conflicts.
  • Verify that the Steam Client itself is updated. An outdated Steam client might not communicate effectively with Xbox services.
  • Check your Internet connection. Sometimes, a fluctuating or slow connection can hinder the sign-in process.

Now, let's move on to more targeted solutions:

  1. Admin Privileges: Run Steam as an administrator. Right-click on the Steam icon, select 'Properties', go to the 'Compatibility' tab, and check 'Run this program as an administrator'.
  2. Clear Cache: Sometimes, clearing the Xbox app cache helps. Press Win+R, type %localappdata%\Packages, and delete the folder starting with Microsoft.XboxIdentityProvider_.
  3. Xbox Services: Ensure Xbox Live services are running correctly. Go to 'Services' in Windows and check if 'Xbox Live Auth Manager', 'Xbox Live Game Save', and 'Xbox Live Networking Service' are running.
  4. Firewall/Security Software: Temporarily disable any firewall or security software that might be blocking the Xbox app or Steam.

If these steps don't resolve the issue, you might want to explore more advanced troubleshooting:

  • Reinstall Xbox App: Uninstall and reinstall the Xbox app.
  • Check for Software Conflicts: Sometimes, other software can interfere with the game's launch. Try performing a clean boot and then run the game.
  • Update Graphics Drivers: Outdated graphics drivers can sometimes cause unexpected issues.

If you've tried all the above and the issue persists, it could be worthwhile reaching out to the support teams of both Steam and Microsoft Flight Simulator. They might have more insight or be aware of a recent bug causing this issue.

Regarding your query's applicability to other platforms, while the specifics of this issue are unique to the Steam version of Microsoft Flight Simulator, the general troubleshooting steps, like checking for updates and verifying game files, are relevant across platforms, including Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and X-Plane 12.

Feel free to post any further details or developments. Sometimes, the smallest nuance can be the key to solving these perplexing issues.

Safe skies!
