You've embarked on an exhilarating journey into the world of flight simulation with your new MacPower Book. Your query about Microsoft Flight Simulator (MSFS) 2020's compatibility with Mac systems is indeed a pertinent one. Let's delve into this.

Microsoft Flight Simulator on Mac: The Current Landscape

MSFS 2020, a cutting-edge simulation platform, unfortunately doesn't offer a native Mac version. However, don't let this deter you. There are viable methods to enjoy this immersive experience on your Mac.

  • Xbox Game Pass Subscription: A straightforward approach involving a subscription service.
  • Virtualization Software: Tools like Parallels allow you to run a virtual Windows environment on your Mac.
  • Boot Camp: This utility enables you to install Windows on your Mac and run it alongside macOS, offering seamless compatibility with MSFS 2020.

Optimizing Performance for MSFS on Mac

Performance optimization is key. Whether you choose Xbox Game Pass, Parallels, or Boot Camp, each method requires fine-tuning for a smooth experience.

Boot Camp: A Closer Look

Given your device, Boot Camp stands out as a robust solution. It allows your Mac to run Windows natively, bypassing compatibility barriers and harnessing the full power of your hardware for an optimal MSFS experience.

Request for Further Details

To provide a tailored recommendation, could you specify your Mac's specifications? Details like the processor, RAM, and graphics capabilities would be highly beneficial.

In Conclusion

While MSFS 2020 may not be natively available for Mac, these workarounds ensure you won't miss out on the action. Whether you choose Xbox Game Pass, virtualization software, or Boot Camp, each has its merits. With your Mac's impressive display, you're in for a visually stunning flight experience.

Feel free to reach out for further guidance or share your progress. Blue skies and tailwinds to you!

P.S. For those using Microsoft Flight Simulator on platforms like X-Plane 12, similar principles for optimization and compatibility apply when bridging platforms.

Hello,
Can I play the Microsoft Flight simulator with a meta quest 2 or 3 VR on a Macbook Air with 16 GB M2 and 245 GB of space? Would I use Steam or Parrells or boot (something...)?

Thank you!

Hello Leslie,

Exploring the possibilities of engaging with Microsoft Flight Simulator through VR on a Mac, specifically with the Meta Quest 2 or 3, is an intriguing scenario. Here's a breakdown of the feasible paths and some considerations you might need to address:

  • VR Compatibility: The Meta Quest 2 and 3 are primarily designed to operate independently or with PC systems that have the necessary power to handle VR applications. The integration with Mac, especially for high-demand simulations like MSFS 2020, introduces several challenges, primarily due to the operating system and hardware compatibility.
  • Using SteamVR: To connect your Meta Quest with a MacBook, SteamVR is the go-to. However, SteamVR requires a Windows environment. This would mean you’d need to run Windows on your Mac.
  • Boot Camp: As mentioned in your query, "boot (something…)" likely refers to Boot Camp, which allows you to install and run Windows directly on your Mac hardware. This setup would be essential for running SteamVR and thereby connecting your Meta Quest 2 or 3.
  • Parallels: While Parallels is a popular choice for running Windows applications on Mac, its performance with VR, particularly for demanding simulations like MSFS, is generally not optimal due to the virtualization overhead and resource limitations.
  • Space Considerations: With 245 GB of space, managing the installation of Windows, MSFS, and any additional content can become a storage management challenge. You will need to plan your space allocation carefully.

Optimizing Your Setup:
To make the most of MSFS 2020 on your MacBook Air via Meta Quest 2 or 3, focusing on optimization is crucial. Running Boot Camp will provide a more native environment for Windows, offering better access to the hardware capabilities of your Mac.

Further Questions:
For a more tailored advice, it would be helpful to know:

  1. The exact model of your MacBook Air to assess the graphical capabilities.
  2. Any specific experiences or simulations you are looking to run in MSFS 2020.

Conclusion:
While the setup you’re considering is not straightforward due to the cross-platform nature of the hardware and software, it is possible with some workarounds like Boot Camp. The performance might not equate to what is achievable on a high-end PC built for gaming and VR, but it can still provide a satisfying flight simulation experience.

Do keep us updated on your progress, and don't hesitate to ask further questions as you go along!

Blue skies!

Am considering running a flight simulator on my mac but am having problems getting my system, OS 14 running on an iMac 8-core intel i7, to recognise the Thrustmaster T-flight HOTAS I have connected via a USB C adapter.  Any one have this problem?  What joystick set up are you using eg when running the digital x-box version?

M1, M2, and M3 laptops and desktops with Apple's new M series silicon doesn't have Bootcamp anymore, so no way to natively run Windows on a modern Mac - with the exception of using a VM setup like Parallels, using, as mentioned the ARM version of Windows 11. Or you can play X-Plane 11/12 natively and efficiently on the current Mac's.

you can also run the game/sim on your iPad or iPhone Via GamePass on your network (MSFS) via your XBox doing the lifting. On a robust network latency isn't an issue.

''A couple of simulators are available for iPhone and iPad; X-Plane, Aerofly, and Infinite Flight are the most detailed (and large) sim apps with a wide variety of other, more simple simulators. That said - the majority allow display of frame rates and it's a consistent 60fps on iOS and iPadOS. My S24 Ultra struggles a bit in more densely populated environments and cockpit scans - dropping to 20-25fps under 10,000' often.

''The M series Mac's are insanely powerful and quick machines that have the ability to run the software, but it will require a bit of specific, different base programming to take advantage of the unified C/GPU cores and memory. X-Plane 12 runs a treat, as does 11. I am hoping for compatibility with the new '24 release or at least a work around. The new architecture, while supporting 3 full bandwidth Thunderbolt 4 ports - doesn't accept external GPUs - in the external T/B GPU boxes that Razer and other manufacturers' machines who build separate boxes with power and size to accept even the largest of the GPU market. This is the only kinda negative I've found on the M1 Max and now M3 Max laptops.

The bonus is how much the app relies on the CPU, less so on the GPU - and the M series CPUs are powerful. I'm hoping that future updates include the X-Box option, as that's a bargain to use, albeit limited to a handful of yokes/sticks, throttles and pedals. As,well as purchasing add on assets; planes, airports, terrain, etc. Fortunately, there are a few excellent options like the Velocity One, and Logitech that smoke the gamepad. But you are extremely limited on additional downloads.

I remember playing MSFS on the Apple IIe before MS had Windows! If I remember right it was Meiggs Field and just monochrome geometric straight but crooked lines and a serious lack of clarity and instrumentation readability, but that's where it began.
