I’m trying to install TacPack, but I’m getting an error about a missing FSX.cfg in:
c:\users\******\appdata\roaming\microsoft\fsx\fsx.cfg

I don’t have the \fsx\ folder that should be inside the Microsoft folder. How do I handle this for the Steam Edition? I need it so I can install TacPack.

FSX:SE doesn’t use the “Microsoft\FSX” cfg folder by default

TacPack is looking for the boxed FSX config path:
C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX\fsx.cfg

But FSX: Steam Edition normally stores it here instead:
C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX-SE\fsx.cfg

So you’re not actually “missing” the cfg — it’s just in the Steam Edition location.

Step-by-step: get FSX-SE to generate the cfg (if it doesn’t exist yet)

  1. Start FSX: Steam Edition one time.
  2. Let it load all the way to the main screen (Free Flight).
  3. Exit FSX.
  4. Now check:
    C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX-SE\fsx.cfg

If TacPack still insists on the boxed path
Some older installers only check the boxed location. Two common workarounds:

  1. Create the expected folder and copy the cfg
    • Create:
      C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX\

    • Copy your Steam cfg:
      ...\Microsoft\FSX-SE\fsx.cfg
      to:
      ...\Microsoft\FSX\fsx.cfg
  2. Make sure you’re not being tripped up by hidden AppData
    • In File Explorer, enable viewing hidden items (AppData is hidden by default).

Note: I’d stick with a simple “copy” first (not moving anything), so FSX-SE keeps using its normal folder and the installer just has something to read.

A couple quick questions so I don’t steer you wrong

  • Do you already have an fsx.cfg under ...\Microsoft\FSX-SE\, or is that missing too?
  • Which TacPack installer/version are you running (and does the error message mention FSX boxed specifically)?
  • Have you ever launched FSX:SE successfully on this Windows user account before?
