Can I download scenery to my E: drive instead of the default C: drive? If so, how?

Thank you.

Expert Answered

Yes — you can put the MSFS “Packages” (scenery/content) on E:. The trick is that MSFS has two different things people lump together:

  • The sim install (the core app) — usually ends up on C: (Steam/Xbox app manages this).
  • The Packages folder (Official + Community, where all the downloaded scenery/world updates live) — this is what you can point to E:.

Option 1 (best): Set the Packages location during first setup
If you’re doing a fresh install / first launch after installing the core sim:

  1. Start MSFS.
  2. When it prompts for the installation location / content download location, choose a folder on E: (example: E:\MSFS Packages).
  3. Let it download everything there.

Option 2: Move an existing installation to E:
If you already have everything on C:, you can move it, but do it carefully:

  1. Close MSFS completely.
  2. Find your current “Packages” folder (the one that contains Official and Community).
  3. Copy or move that entire folder to E: (example: E:\MSFS Packages).
  4. Start MSFS again. It should ask you for the content location if it can’t find it. Point it to the new folder on E:.

Tip: Don’t point MSFS at E:\ directly — create a dedicated folder like E:\MSFS Packages so it stays tidy and permissions are simpler.

A couple quick questions so I don’t steer you wrong:

  • Are you on the Microsoft Store/Xbox app version or the Steam version?
  • Have you already installed/downloaded the world/scenery content on C: (i.e., do you already have big Official and Community folders)?
  • When you launch MSFS right now, does it show any message about not being able to find the installed packages, or does it just go straight to the main menu?
