One of those don't-really-know-it-but-afraid-to-ask things;

The Flight Director - can anyone confirm that its only fuction is to put a little cross-hair on the artificial horizon to show you which way to go when under manual control? And you can turn it on or off without affecting the autopilot?

Flight Director....as you guessed best described by its name! Points you in the right direction. Keep the "dot" on the artificial horizon on the cross and you won't go wrong. Totally independent to the AP so you can turn it on and off as you please. Very useful tool when flying manually.
