What exactly is a plane's hydraulic system and what does the pilot need to know/do about it? There's nothing on Wikipedia about this so I'm a bit puzzeled.
Thanks a lot in advance, JTH 🙂
Hydraulic systems differ slightly depending on the aircraft. Normally,on large jets, the flight controls, landing gear operation and wheel brakes are hydraulically actuated. Some thrust reverser's are hyd. also. Pilots need to know what to do if one or more of the hyd. systems fails; what is effected. How to handle backup pumps and manual reversion controls.
Thanks CRJ. So what exactly is the hydraulic system? Is it just used to collectively refer to the systems you mentioned - landing gear, wheel brakes and flight controls?
And what would a pilot do if the hyrdaulic system failed?
Thanks once again, JTH 🙂
Pray, lol 😂
A hydraulic system uses trapped fluid to transmit force over a distance. Your car has brakes that are hydraulically driven. When you apply force to the pedal, the force is transmitted to the brake pads. Similar to what happens in an aircraft. Hydraulics are better than cables because they don't stretch and need to be constantly adjusted. Also Hydraulics, in accordance with Pascal's Law, multiply force within the system. This allow more force to be applied to the brake pads than what you use to press the brake pedal.
Hyd. failure would force the pilot to use backup hyd. pumps and or power affected system by alternate means.
Thanks. Still not 100% clear but at least that's given me an outline!
They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Since I'm tired of typing 🙂 , here's a picture. I hope this helps.
A hydraulic system uses a liquid, usually oil, to convert, store or transmit power.

System designed to transmit power through a liquid medium, permitting multiplication of force in accordance with Pascal’s law, which states that “a pressure exerted on a confined liquid is transmitted undiminished in all directions and acts with equal force on all equal areas. ...

A mechanism operated by the resistance offered or the pressure transmitted when a liquid is forced through a small opening or tube.
Theres some definitons and sites they came from 😉
