Virus Problems

Hi there,

Just wondering if anyone can help me with a couple of problems I am having. Firstly, Windows is telling me every day that my anti virus software is out-of-date. Avast updates every day and I have even checked and it is definately not out-of-date. So why am I getting this message??

Second, a programme called "WinAntiVirus2006" keeps popping-up and automatically downloading. I have scanned it for virus' and it appears there is none but it makes me nervous. I obviously don't won't to install it but how can I stop the pop-up download??

I have tried cleaning my computer through the usual channels but to no avail.

Any help would be very much appreciated,
PW 😉

Sounds to me like you may have gotten hit with something, but I will defer to those with more knowledge. I can tell you that my norton prompted me with a new live update, which it has never done before, so there may be a shark in the water. Dont Know

Best of luck, PW

I would suggest running HijackThis:

It is a manual virus deletion program but you can paste the logfile up here if it baffles you and get help with what to delete and what not to delete. I did it a few months ago back in January and found a lot of unwanted Censored in it. My old banger speeded up thereafter 😉

Norton is really good. Never had problems with it. Also there is a feature called pop-up blocking. It's very useful especially in cases liike yours pilotwannabe 😉

Type in msconfig in to your RUN command bar and select the last tab which is 'startup'

Scroll through the programs and you might find WinAntiVirus2006.exe lurking in there. If you do uncheck it and any other programs you don't want to start when the computer boots up. 😉

Right-click on the avast icon in the notification tray and select update the program (or words to that effect) Avast released a new version at the beginning of the week.

Stop clicking on popups that look like standard windows notification windows. When you click on the X, you download what ever crap it is linked to...probably and ActveX control. It's a favorite way to fool people into downloading malware.

Check your control panel/add/remove programs and see if you can find the unwanted program and remove it. In the mean time, I'll research what it is.

Crash have you use ewido recently?
I'm asking you this because a few months ago i run it and i had a very... disturbing program installed on my system that couldn't get rid without spending about an hour...
Of course there is always the possibility that it was my mistake... 🤔 Dont Know

The Winantivirus was a free A/V program from MS,but this now requires subscription(it was auto d/loaded if you were set to receive windows updates automatically
Goto your control panel and open add/remove programs and look for it and delete it.You are using Avast, and that is a good A/V program

I was basing my statement on reports by people who had used it to remove the program successfully. I was unaware of any potential problem it posed. Whatever happened to the days when I knew everything? 🙄 Crying or Very sad
