so my pilot's log is no longer recording flights. what is the best way to reinstall this so it works - or can that even be done?

Try taking it out of that folder and seeing if the sim will build a new one.

do you know where that folder would be or what it would be called? I looked through the FSX folder, but couldn't find anything specifically marked Pilot's Log
In your documents folder (My Documents on XP, Documents on Vista), look for a folder called Flight Simulator X Files. The logbook will be in there. I think it is called logbook.bin
