Please explain the lights next to the runway....

Can someone help me understand the 4 red/white light system on approach next to the runway.

4 white=way too high
3 white, 1 red=a little too high
2 white, 2 red=perfect
1 white, 3 red=a little too low
4 red=way too low

Easiest thing to remember:

"If its all white - outta sight"

"If its all red - you're dead"

Anything in between you can adjust for
