i notice that sometimes the gps compass is off quite a bit, and i have never seen it happen on any other plane. is there a way to correct it? have any of you noticed this before with the howard or any other plane?

Have you tried hitting the "D" key. (Altitude)

I thought the D key straightens out the compass, and B sets baro for altitude?

Yep!
"D" Heading Indicator.
I should look at my sheets of key commands.
