In order to keep a plane in the air for the longest period;
How do you get the best climb rate? And how would you find out which altitude and throttle settings are the most fuel efficient for say a 747?

Difficult one to answer as every aircraft and every flight is different due to payload/fuel uplift. I guess by rate of climb you mean most economical climb speed, this is worked out using some tricky maths...most pilots like me are dumb so we trust the FMC! If you have this fitted to any ac in your fleet the FMC will give you "Econ" climb speed. Altitude- each aircraft will have an optimum level, but the higher the better! Throttle settings- Aim to maintain a speed rather than a setting initially then see what % N1/EPR this equates to for future reference. Cruise speeds again differ in a commercial airliner but for the 744 mach 0.85 @ 35k is what to aim for.
