Hi Simon,
FSX Acceleration vs FSX Steam Edition (FSX:SE)
They’re related, but they’re not the same “package.”
- FSX Acceleration is an expansion pack for the boxed/DVD version of FSX (FSX Deluxe/Standard). It adds a bunch of content (missions/aircraft), and more importantly it updates FSX to the final “Acceleration/SP2” code level.
- FSX Steam Edition is a separate release of FSX sold/installed through Steam. It already includes the SP2/Acceleration-level updates baked in, plus some Steam-specific changes (mainly how it installs/where it lives, and some behind-the-scenes fixes).
Add-on compatibility (the practical bit)
In most cases, yes: add-ons that work in “FSX Acceleration / SP2” will also work in FSX:SE, and vice-versa. Where people get tripped up is usually not the sim “features,” but the installer and the install paths.
What can cause trouble?
- Install location / permissions: FSX:SE is often installed under Steam’s folder (commonly under Program Files). Some older add-ons don’t love modern Windows permissions, and some installers assume the old boxed FSX path.
- Installer detection: Some older payware installers look specifically for the boxed FSX registry keys and don’t “see” FSX:SE automatically.
- FSX vs FSX:SE variants: If the download specifically says “FSX:SE version,” it’s often just an installer that detects Steam correctly, or it may include little tweaks for the Steam path.
Rule of thumb
- If an add-on says FSX SP2 / Acceleration, it’s generally good for FSX:SE.
- If it says FSX:SE only, it may still work in boxed FSX + Acceleration, but the installer might be Steam-specific.
- If it says FSX (no SP2/Accel mentioned), it can still work, but it’s a bit more of a gamble (especially very old gauges/modules).
A couple quick questions so I can be more specific
- Are you currently running boxed FSX + Acceleration, or FSX:SE (or considering switching)?
- Any specific add-ons you’re worried about (aircraft name/vendor), and are they payware with an installer or just a manual zip install?
- What Windows version are you on?
