Cannot get anything to work absolutely cold and dark. When switches in the upper panel indicate ON does that mean to press it to turn it on or does it indicate the state that it is in?

It seems you've stumbled upon the intricacy of cold and dark startups within Microsoft Flight Simulator X (FSX). This is quite a common area of concern for many pilots, and I'll do my best to guide you through it.

Firstly, let's clarify what a cold and dark state means in the context of aviation simulation.

Cold and Dark State refers to a situation where the aircraft's engines, electrical systems, and other power units are all off. In real-life aviation, pilots often find themselves in this state when they first enter the cockpit. In FSX and even the latest platforms like Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020) and X-Plane 12, replicating this experience requires careful attention to the simulation settings.

Now, let's break down your question.

Switch Indicators:

  • ON Position: This usually means the switch is in the active or engaged position.
  • OFF Position: Conversely, this means the system or component controlled by that switch is inactive or disengaged.

How to Interpret the Switches:

  • If the switch indicates "ON," it means the switch is in that state, and the corresponding system is activated.
  • If you press it again, it will likely shift to the "OFF" state, deactivating the corresponding system.

Achieving a True Cold and Dark State:
If you're having trouble getting everything completely cold and dark, here's a simple checklist to follow:

  1. Shut down the engines and all auxiliary power units (APUs).
  2. Turn off all electrical systems, including lighting and avionics.
  3. Ensure all fuel pumps and hydraulic systems are deactivated.
  4. Consult the aircraft's specific manual if available, as different aircraft might have unique requirements.

Further Tips:

You may want to explore aircraft-specific tutorials or guides available online. These resources can offer in-depth guidance for your particular aircraft model.

Practicing the cold and dark startup procedure with different aircraft will enhance your overall understanding and skills.

I hope this helps clarify the functionality of the switches and assists you in achieving a true cold and dark state. Feel free to reach out if you have any more questions or need further assistance.
