Making that first flight

How do I start flying with Microsoft Flight Simulator (MSFS/FS2020)

My keenest interest is WW1 flying, but just making a first flight is eluding me, having bought the Steam 2020 version.

Hello Donald,

Welcome to the fascinating world of flight simulation! I can understand how eager you must be to start flying, especially with a focus on WW1-era aircraft. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 (MSFS/FS2020) is a fantastic choice for a realistic and immersive experience. Let me help you get started with your first flight.

Step 1: Launching the simulator
Once you've installed MSFS/FS2020 via Steam, launch the application, and wait for the main menu to appear.

Step 2: Selecting an aircraft and location
On the main menu, click on the World Map icon. This is where you can choose your aircraft and departure/arrival locations. You mentioned an interest in WW1 flying, but since the default aircraft in MSFS/FS2020 do not include any WW1-era planes, I would recommend starting with a simple, easy-to-fly aircraft like the Cessna 172 Skyhawk. You can browse the available aircraft in the Aircraft Selection panel on the left side of the screen.

Once you've chosen your aircraft, it's time to pick a departure location. Search for an airport using the search bar at the top of the screen or click on a location directly on the map. Then, click on the runway or parking area where you'd like to start.

Step 3: Setting up the weather and time
Before you start your first flight, you can customize the weather conditions and time of day by adjusting the Weather and Time settings on the right side of the screen. For your first flight, I would recommend setting the weather to clear skies and the time to daytime, so you can easily see and navigate during your flight.

Step 4: Starting the flight
Once you're satisfied with your aircraft, location, weather, and time settings, click the Fly button on the bottom-right corner of the screen to start your flight.

Step 5: Getting familiar with the cockpit
Once the flight loads, you'll find yourself in the cockpit of your selected aircraft. Use the mouse to look around and familiarize yourself with the various controls and instruments.

Step 6: Preparing for takeoff
To start the engine(s), follow the aircraft's specific checklist or use the CTRL + E keyboard shortcut for a quick start. Release the parking brake by pressing CTRL + NUM DECIMAL. Gently increase the throttle using the F3 key or by dragging the throttle lever in the cockpit.

Step 7: Taking off
As the aircraft gains speed, gently pull back on the yoke or joystick to lift the nose, and you will become airborne! Adjust your pitch and throttle to maintain a safe climb speed.

Step 8: Navigating and landing
Now that you're in the air, you can practice basic flight maneuvers and navigation. When you're ready to land, locate a suitable airport, align with the runway, and gradually reduce your altitude and airspeed. Touch down gently and use the brakes to slow down before exiting the runway.

These steps should help you make your first flight in MSFS/FS2020. Remember, practice makes perfect! You may want to explore online resources, such as YouTube tutorials or the Fly Away Simulation Flight School (as it expands), for more detailed guidance on flying and mastering different aircraft types. As for WW1-era aircraft, there are additional aircraft packages available for purchase or as freeware from various flight simulation websites. Once you're more comfortable with the basics of flight, you can expand your collection and start flying those WW1-era planes you're passionate about. Some websites to explore include:

  • Fly Away Simulation: Offers a variety of add-ons, including WW1-era aircraft, for Microsoft Flight Simulator.
  • Sim Outhouse: Another resource for aircraft and scenery add-ons, with a dedicated section for vintage planes.

I hope these steps and resources help you embark on your flight simulation journey with confidence. Enjoy your flights, and feel free to ask any further questions you may have as you progress through this incredible hobby.

Blue skies and happy landings!
