Issues with Ground Service Vehicle Collision and AI Altitude Accuracy in FS2020

Bob Sment Guest

Have been using FS2020 since the initial release.

Two questions:

  1. When taxiing, ground service vehicles interfere with the path of the taxi (they don't move out of the path and their wings slice through vehicles).
  2. When using AI mode, aircraft never reach ATC's assigned altitude( always off by a few hundred feet).

Any suggestions ??
Thanks for any input,
Bob Sment

Hi Bob Sment,

It's always a pleasure to assist fellow flight sim enthusiasts with the challenges they face. Let's dive straight into your queries:

1. Ground Service Vehicle Interference:
One of the common issues many simmers have noted is the behavior of ground vehicles. Here's what you can consider:

  • Collision Avoidance: Ensure you have the "AI Ground Vehicle Collision Avoidance" enabled in the settings. This should, in theory, prevent ground vehicles from interfering with your aircraft.
  • Use Scenery Mods: Some third-party airports or scenery mods are optimized to reduce this kind of interference. Ensure that you're using up-to-date and well-reviewed sceneries.
  • Manual Taxi: Consider manually controlling your taxi routes, giving wide berths to areas dense with ground traffic.
  • Report Bugs: As the community grows and updates roll out, the developers rely on user feedback. Report the specific instances and airports where this happens via the official MSFS forum.

2. AI Altitude Issues:
Your observation about the AI mode not adhering strictly to ATC's assigned altitudes is another known quirk. Here's how you can approach this:

  • Calibration: Firstly, make sure your hardware, especially the yoke or joystick, is correctly calibrated. Hardware anomalies sometimes translate to in-game behavior.
  • ATC Workarounds: Some users have found success by requesting a different altitude and then immediately requesting the original one. It can often "reset" the AI's approach to the assigned altitude.
  • Monitor Barometric Pressure: Ensure the aircraft's barometric pressure is set correctly. A wrong setting can cause discrepancies in altitude readings.
  • Updates & Patches: Keep your game updated. The developers frequently release patches that address AI behavior. Staying updated can ensure you benefit from these improvements.

Lastly, from my knowledge, both the issues you've mentioned have been topics of discussion in the community. Engaging with other simmers and sharing experiences can sometimes yield unexpected solutions and workarounds. I hope these suggestions assist you in having a smoother experience in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020.
